Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 49

Chapter 49

Iris’s POV

A Week Later

I was healed. At least, that’s what the healer said.

The truth was that my body had recovered physically. The pain was gone. The dizziness had faded. I could move without any form of pain or ache.

But inside? Inside, I was still a mess. The fear still lingered at the back of my mind, and it refused to leave.

Partially true to Rowan’s words, he had been around almost every day. If he wasn’t there, Asher was, or Lucas, his cold Gamma. I was never left alone. It was suffocating at times, but I never said a word, because deep down, I needed it.

I still found myself glancing around in fear, sniffing food twice before tasting it, and waking in the middle of the night with my heart racing for no reason. The poisoning had left a scar inside me that I wasn’t sure was going to fade anytime soon.

And that was exactly why I knew I couldn’t stay here. Someone wanted me dead, and I wasn’t going to give them another chance.

It wasn’t just about the poison, it was about the fact that someone in Rowan’s pack had done it. If they could reach me once, they could reach me again. The thought of being a target of someone’s hate made my skin crawl. I couldn’t keep pretending that Rowan, or anyone else, could keep watching over me forever.

Just the thought of leaving made my heart ache. It was surprising because I hadn’t stepped foot outside for once, and I hadn’t spoken to anyone except Rowan, Asher, Lucas, Chloe, Jasmine, and the healer. I wasn’t supposed to feel attached, but my heart kept aching. Something kept nagging at the back of my mind, but I refused to acknowledge it-I wasn’t ready to acknowledge it.

I had been staring at the window for so long that I didn’t hear the knock until the door creaked open.

“Morning,” Asher greeted, his green eyes twinkling brightly. “You look better.”

“I feel better,” I replied, forcing a light smile.

He leaned against the wall. “That’s good. Because I have news. You know, before all this happened, we were supposed to do your official tour of the territory. But it got delayed. So…”

I released a humorless laugh. “What’s the use now?” I muttered, shaking my head.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked curiously.

“I’ll be leaving soon. No point in putting myself through that kind of torture.”

The silence that followed made me glance up. Asher was staring at me with furrowed eyebrows. “You’re leaving?”

The way he said it made a small pang of guilt rise in my chest. “Yeah,” I said after a pause, keeping my voice as steady as I could. “It’s for the best.”

He studied me for a moment longer, then asked quietly, “Does Rowan know?”

“Yes,” I answered quickly, but I could hear the uncertainty in my own voice. “He… he knows I’ll be leaving.”

Asher tilted his head with a small hint of doubt in his expression. “And he’s fine with that?”

I avoided his gaze, focusing instead on the window. “It’s not his choice to make,” I said, my tone coming out sharply.

Before he could reply, the door opened again.

Lucas stepped in, and the air in the room suddenly became cold, and I resisted the urge to shudder.

Rowan’s gamma was a tall, broad-shouldered man with short red hair and grey eyes like steel. His eyes were cold, unreadable, and sharp. He didn’t glance at me, didn’t smile, didn’t even bother with a greeting, he just gave a curt nod to Asher.

“Asher,” he said in a low voice, “It’s not your shift yet. It’s mine. So I’ll take it from here.”

Asher glanced at me once more like he wanted to say something, before pushing off the wall. “Try not to scare her, Lucas,” he said with a smirk, but the gamma didn’t respond.

Lucas moved to stand near the door with a stiff posture and military type of pose. I had seen him several times over the week, but he had never spoken to me. He only grunted in acknowledgment if I said hello.

And maybe I was just being paranoid, but there was something in his eyes when he looked at me, something that looked a lot like resentment.
