Chapter 51
Iris’s POV
“Does he… know who it might be?” I asked carefully, studying Jasmine’s face.
She shook her head. “Not yet. He’s been digging, but no solid evidence.” She tilted her head, narrowing her eyes. “Do you know anything? Did you see or hear something?”
I stiffened, my heart thudding. Chloe’s smirk flashed in my mind, but I kept the words in.
“No,” I whispered, looking down. “I don’t know.”
She watched for another moment, then she sighed. “Alright. I just… I wanted to check on you, and make sure you’re okay.”
I gave her a weak smile. “I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine.”
I released a small laugh. “Thanks.”
She grinned sheepishly, bumping her shoulder against mine. “I mean it, though. You look like you’ve got a lot on your mind. More than just the poisoning.”
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. She wasn’t wrong.
She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Iris… what’s going on?”
For a second, I thought about telling her that I planned to leave, and that it would be easier to sneak out instead of facing Rowan’s reaction. But I knew I couldn’t. Jasmine wasn’t Rowan, but she was still his sister. If I told her, he would know before I even worked up the courage to say it myself.
“Nothing,” I said quickly. Why was I so worried about Rowan’s reaction?
Jasmine raised an eyebrow but she didn’t push. Instead, she sighed and leaned back. “Well, just so you know, I’m really glad you’re alive.”
I nodded faintly as the guilt pressed harder in my chest. She didn’t know very soon she would not see me again.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Lucas shift by the door with a blank expression on his face. His cold eyes glanced briefly at me, then back to the wall.
Jasmine followed my gaze and smirked. “Don’t mind him. He always looks like that. You would think someone glued his face into a permanent scowl.”
I blinked at her, not really sure how to respond, but Lucas didn’t flinch or even look in her direction.
“See?” Jasmine continued, leaning closer with a mischievous grin on her face. “I’ve known him for years. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him laugh. Or smile. Or… do anything human.”
Lucas finally moved. He tightened his jaw as his cold gray eyes flicked toward her. “I’m not here to entertain you, Jasmine,” he said flatly. His voice was low but sharp.

Jasmine only grinned wider. “Oh, he speaks! What a miracle!”
If possible, his expression became colder, but Jasmine didn’t seem fazed. She leaned back, with an amused smile on her face. “Don’t let him scare you, Iris. This is just Lucas. He’s always moody, grumpy, all work, and no f. But deep under all that coldness, I promise he’s… well, actually no, he’s exactly like that all the time.” She giggled, bumping my shoulder lightly.
I released a small laugh at that. The tension in the room eased slightly, but the unease in my chest didn’t.
“Rowan trusts him with everything,” Jasmine added with a softer tone. “If Lucas is here, you can calm yourself. He’s not the warmest person, but he’s very loyal My brother would never keep him at your door if he wasn’t absolutely sure you would be safe.”
Locas stayed silent, staring straight ahead barely blinking.
“See?” Jasmine said again, rolling her eyes. “Hopeless.”
I nodded faintly, pretending that her words had comforted me, but deep down, I wasn’t convinced. Maybe Jasmine was right, still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Lucas held some resentment against me.
Jasmine opened her mouth to say something else when the door slammed open.
I jumped, my heart jumped into my throat. Rowan stood in the doorway, his eyes blazed with fury and another emotion I couldn’t read. His presence caused tension to fill the room instantly.
