Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 50

Chapter 50

Tris’s POV

For some reason, I was tense,

And it wasn’t because of the stole, cold Lucas standing by my door. It was because of Asher’s reaction earlier.

The moment I told him I was leaving, he looked at me like I had said something completely wrong, His surprise, and his doubt stuck with me, nagging at my mind. He hadn’t argued, but that look on his face was enough to make me question everything.

Surely Rowan knew I wouldn’t stay here forever. He had told me more than once that I was free to go whenever I got better. He didn’t keep me here as a prisoner. I wasn’t bound to him, or this pack. So why did Asher act like I had just dropped a bombshell?

And why did the thought of telling Rowan suddenly feel like a weight pressing down on my chest?

Maybe it would be better to avoid the awkwardness altogether. Just pack up one day and leave. No goodbyes, no explanations, and no long weird stares that would make me hesitate. He had promised me freedom, hadn’t he? I was just going to take up his promise.

But even as I thought about it, my chest ached. Within a few days, I had made attachments here, and they made the thought of leaving harder than I imagined.

I bit the inside of my cheek, staring at my fidgeting fingers. I couldn’t tell them goodbye. I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it, so maybe sneaking out was the best way.

The sound of the door bursting open cut through my thoughts.

I flinched, almost jumping off the bed as Jasmine rushed in. She was panting heavily. “Oh my goodness-Iris!” she gasped, placing one hand to her chest. “I just heard about the poisoning. I’m so sorry!”

She crossed the room quickly and sat down beside me on the bed.

“I wasn’t here when it happened,” she said, still breathless, shaking her head. “I was at the Silver Pack, handling some important business. I just came back a few minutes ago, and then I heard everything. I can’t believe I wasn’t here.”

She spoke so fast, and I blinked, then replied.

“It’s fine,” I said softly, nodding. “Rowan told me.”

“I know, I know,” she muttered, shaking her head with guilt all over face. “But still… Iris, I feel awful. You could have died, and I wasn’t here.”

I gave her a sinall reassuring smile. It wasn’t Jasmine’s fault at all, but she kept feeling guilty, and it also made me feel guilty for dragging everyone into my problems. “You couldn’t have known.”

My throat tightened as the memory surfaced again. The burning pain through my veins, the helplessness, the thought that maybe I wouldn’t open my eyes again. I swallowed. “I didn’t die.”

“That’s not the point,” Jasmine said fiercely, her brown eyes flashing almost like her brother’s. “Someone tried

to kill you, in this pack. The person needs to be found immediately and punished.”

“You sound just like Rowan,” I murmured, forcing a small laugh. “He wants this person to be punished.”

“Well, of course,” she said immediately. “He’s furious. You don’t really know how he is. He doesn’t take betrayal lightly. Whoever did this? They’re dead the second he finds proof.”

Something cold ran down my spine at her ominous words.
