Chapter 57
Iris’s POV
I whipped my head around so fast that my neck ached, but there was nothing. My chest squeezed painfully and it became hard to breathe.
I forced myself to move again, this time, I increased my pace.
I walked fast for a long time, ignoring my tiredness, pushed forward by adrenaline.
Eventually, the feeling of being watched eased. My heart stopped pounding so hard, and my steps slowed down. I exhaled shakily, running a hand through my hair.
“It was just nerves,” I whispered again, trying to convince myself that I was safe.
I walked and walked, until the tension in my shoulders finally melted away. Hours must have passed, but I wasn’t sure. Yet, I couldn’t see any familiar place that I could trace on the map.
After a while, I paused to lean against a tree. My legs trembled as exhaustion began to creep in. I tilted my head up, staring at the moon. Soon, it would become morning, and everywhere would be brighter. And maybe I would be able to find a road, or a town, by that time.
I straightened, ready to continue walking when suddenly, the feeling of being watched hit me again, but this time, it was way stronger than before.
The prickling sensation ran down my spine like icy water. My chest tightened as the air shifted like before, but this time, it was worse.
My stomach dropped, and a cold wave of dread washed over me.
I froze as deja vu slammed into me hard.
I swallowed. I knew this feeling.
I had felt it before-the other day before those rogues attacked.
Memories flashed through my mind. That horrid smell. Those red eyes. Their snarling jaws.
I could still remember the helplessness and horror I felt that day.
My knees weakened, and I struggled to breathe.
,” I whispered, shaking my head frantically. “Not again. Not now.”
“No,”
A sharp snap sounded from behind me, and I stiffened.
I could feel those eyes staring at me, and my skin crawled.
“Who’s there?” My voice cracked, no matter how I tried to steady it.
There was no answer.
Another snap sounded from beside me.

Panic surged through me, as I pleaded with my wolf to do something. Anything. My wolf stirred weakly inside me, then she retreated almost immediately, crushing any hope I had.
“Damn it,” I cursed under my breath, my voice shook. I clenched my hands. “Why are you doing this? Do you want us to die? Is that what you want? Why don’t you do something?”
I begged her desperately, but she didn’t respond.
Terror flooded through me when I saw them emerge from the trees.
Their drooling snarling mouths. Their vicious red eyes.
Rogues. My lungs tightened.
When I realized that there were eight of them, my blood ran cold.
My body locked up completely, as fear chained me in place. My vision blurred, and I began gasping for air.
The rogues moved closer towards me with menacing growls, their eyes gleamed with delight as they smelt my intense fear.
I stumbled backward instinctively, finally breaking free of my frozen state. My back slammed against a tree, and I flinched, releasing a small cry. My fingers held on to the tree, as I tried to steady myself before my knees gave out completely.
