Chapter 58
Iris’s POV
However, I wasn’t fully unconscious, I could hear snarls, snapping jaws and the sound of paws hitting the ground. It was like my mind and body was in some sort of fear paralysis, refusing to wake.
Through my foggy mind, I caught a glimpse of gold eyes that glowed so bright. I watched half-conscious as a massive black wolf slammed into one of the rogues with brutal force. The rogue yelped before the large wolf’s teeth clamped down on its neck, ending its life instantly.
Flashes of the fight blurred in and out my vision. The black wolf was fast, and brutal, it was nothing like the rogues. His growls were menacing and chilling, and his movements were so fluid like he was in a dance. One by one, the rogues fell.
I wanted to focus, but my head spun and my body wouldn’t move. Everything felt far away, like I was inside
water.
The next time I opened my eyes, the black wolf was standing over the last rogue. With one swift swipe, he tore it down. Then there was a heavy silence, a huge difference to the chaos some minutes ago.
At the end, all the rogues were dead, and the huge black wolf was completely unscathed.
Then the wolf turned, and his golden eyes fixed on me. For the briefest moment, I thought he was going to lunge at me with the same deadly intent as he had done with the wolves.
When I opened my eyes again, the wolf wasn’t a wolf anymore. In his place was a familiar tall, broad- shouldered man covered in sweat and blood.
I couldn’t see his face clearly as my mind still refused to make sense of him. All I knew was that when he walked toward me, I didn’t feel fear. I felt safe.
He crouched down beside me. Then his strong hands slid under me, and lifted me like I weighed nothing. Immediately, his warmth and sweet scent surrounded me. My body instantly relaxed as if it finally understood that it didn’t need to fight anymore, and just like that, my whole body began to shut down.
My eyes grew heavy.
Just before I lost consciousness, I asked the familiar stranger holding me. “Where are you taking me?”
“Home,”
That was the last thing I heard before I lost consciousness.
When I opened my eyes again, everything was different,
I wasn’t in the woods anymore. The scent of blood and rogues was gone. I was no longer laying on the hard forest floors. Instead, I was enjoying the soft mattress and blankets. The walls around me told me exactly where
I was.

I blinked several times in confusion. For a long while, I stared at the ceiling, trying to piece together how I got here.
Or was I dead?
Then a voice cut through the silence, causing me to flinch.
“You almost died. Again.”
The words were cold, and sharp, piercing straight through me.
My breath hitched, and I turned my head slowly toward the voice. Rowan sat in the chair beside my bed, his arms were crossed, and his posture was stiff. His dark hair fell slightly into his eyes, but his brown eyes pierced through me, blazing with fury that made me want to shrink away.
I froze, and guilt sat in my stomach. His gaze was intense, pinning me down.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. My throat felt dry, like I hadn’t spoken in days. All I could release was a shaky breath.
Rowan’s jaw tightened. “Do you have any idea what you did? What could have happened?” His tone didn’t rise, but the anger in it was very clear.
My chest tightened, and I looked down at my hands in my lap. They were trembling slightly. “I…” My voice cracked. “I didn’t think-”
“No,” Rowan cut me off sharply. “You didn’t think at all, and because of that, you almost got yourself torn apart. Do you realize how close you were to death? Do you even care if you die?”
