Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 94

Chapter 94

Iris’s POV

The air shifted the moment I realized it was Rowan beside me.

I froze mid-step, my chest tightened. My breath caught, but I forced myself to keep walking forward, keeping my eyes straight ahead.

When had Rowan taken Shane’s place without me noticing?

It was the first time I had been this close to him since the kiss incident two weeks ago.

If Rowan was aware of that too, he didn’t show it. He walked steadily with an unreadable expression. He kept his gaze forward, as if there was nothing unusual between us.

I told myself not to think about it. I was too tired and in pain, to let him take up space in my head. So I walked in silence.

The silence wasn’t awkward or tense, though. It was somehow comfortable.

For some reason, as we reached the door to my quarters, my heart started pounding.

I stopped to open the door, and Rowan slowed down too. When I opened the door, I noticed Rowan moving to follow me in.

I hesitated, glancing up at him. “Are you sure it’s… advisable for you to come in?” I asked quietly.

Rowan raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Advisable?”

I swallowed. “Considering what happened last time.” I said slowly.

I didn’t have to spell it out. He knew what I was hinting at.

For the first time that morning, something shifted in his face.

A sigh escaped him. “Don’t worry. I’ll control myself from jumping your bones.” He muttered with dry sarcasm dripping from his voice.

My lips twitched before I could stop them. It wasn’t much, it was just like a flicker of a smile, but Rowan’s eyes caught it immediately. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. He looked pleased.

Silently, I stepped aside from the door.

Rowan brushed past me, stepping into the room. He looked around slowly, scanning every detail. His eyes scanned the changes that had been made two weeks ago. The curtains, the bed cover, the sofas, the book shelf, and more. I then remembered that he hadn’t been in here since those changes were made.

“How do you like the changes?” he asked casually.

I nodded faintly. “It’s okay.”

Then I shifted awkwardly. “I… haven’t thanked you. So… thank you.”

His eyes softened slightly at my thanks, but then they shifted downward. His eyes stayed fixed on my hands.

“Show me,” Rowan said quietly.

I hesitated. “It’s nothing-”

“Iris.” His voice was firmer this time.

I released a small sigh, then I lifted my bandaged hands. Rowan stepped closer, holding them

as gentle as possible, yet I winced. His eyes darkened immediately, and for a brief moment, his eyes flashed gold.

“Lucas did this?” His voice was a low growl.

My chest tightened, but I forced myself to answer honestly. “No. Not exactly. I did this to myself.”

His eyes snapped to mine with disbelief. “What do you mean?”

“I was trying to prove a point,” I admitted. “Lucas pushed, but I kept going because I wanted to. I didn’t stop when I should have.”

Rowan clenched his jaw so tight that I thought his teeth might break. “He should’ve known when to stop you, that is why he’s your trainer.”

I shook my head. “It’s not his fault. te. I’ve been t

trying to push myself past my limit, to

prove I can do this without my wolf. But-” My voice cracked. “It’s impossible.”

Rowan’s expression shifted. He was still angry, but now there was concern, and sympathy. He took a step closer.

“Where is she?” he asked carefully.

I looked away, staring at the floor. “I don’t know”

His eyes tilted his head. “What do you mean you don’t know? She’s a part of you. When did she become unresponsive?”

I released a bitter laugh, shaking my head. “She went inactive after everything that happened with-“I cut myself off abruptly, my chest tightened.

No. I wasn’t ready to go there. Not yet.

“Never mind,” I muttered, shaking my head.

Rowan studied me for a long moment, like he wanted to press, but he didn’t. Instead, he released a deep breath, then he released my hands, and took a step back. “Come on,” he said finally.

I frowned. “What?”

“I have an idea. Follow me.”

I sighed heavily, my whole body was already aching. “Rowan, I’m tired. I can’t-”

“Come on,” he interrupted firmly. “You won’t have to do anything. I just want to show you something.”

I stared at him, wondering if I should fight him. But Rowan’s expression was serious, and honestly, I didn’t have the energy to argue. So, after a moment, I nodded reluctantly.

“Fine.”

His lips twitched in a smile.

Rowan opened the door, leading me outside. We walked in silence through the halls. Every muscle in my body protested, and my hands throbbed, but I was curious to see what Rowan wanted to show me.

As we walked, I noticed that he was leading me through the familiar abandoned path that Jasmine had led me through when she was trying to sneak me out of the pack.

I was relieved that I wouldn’t have to deal with the stares and murmurs as usual.

Rowan didn’t speak until we exited the packhouse through the back door, then we moved toward the woods.
