Zachary had been spacing out when he heard the commotion. He turned his head and saw a crowd standing in the smoke, which startled him. “W–What’s going on?”
“Zachary, are you okay?”
“Where’s the fire?”
Matthew pushed through the crowd. When he saw Zachary standing there completely unharmed, he exhaled in relief.
Realizing they had misunderstood, Zachary quickly explained, “I’m smoking cured meat. It’s a way of making food–using smoke to preserve the meat.”
“We thought your place caught fire.” Elias collapsed against Zachary. “Gosh, I’m exhausted. Let me rest a bit.”
Quincy was still catching his breath. “Good thing you’re alright.”
The tribe members watched curiously for a while before gradually leaving.
All of a sudden, Zachary asked, “Where are the intestines?“!
Matthew replied, “By the river. I’ll go get them.”
When Kyle, Yael, and the others heard that Zachary was making a new kind of food, they immediately followed Matthew back to the river, scrambling to help wash the organs.
Their enthusiasm was almost absurd. No matter how much Matthew tried to chase them away, they refused to leave.
Since Quincy and Elias were already there, they stayed to help Zachary with the smoking process.
The cured meat needed to be smoked for a day or two. After that, it could just be hung above the stove inside the cave to air–dry.
With some free time, Zachary began preparing the filling for sausages. The lean and fatty meat had to be chopped separately before being seasoned.
It was hard work, but strength was something therians had plenty of. As long as there was enough food, they worked like machines, absolutely content to keep going.
When Matthew returned, his hands were empty.
Just as Zachary was about to speak up, he saw Yael and the others behind him, each holding heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, and intestines with both hands, as if offering tribute. They presented everything to Zachary with much enthusiasm.
Kyle smiled sincerely. “All cleaned.”
Elias couldn’t bear to watch, shaking his head as he continued adding wood to the fire with Quincy.

Daniel chimed in, “Yeah, they’re super clean now!”
Ethan followed right after, saying, “Not a trace of smell.”
It was like they had rehearsed their lines.
“Thank you…” Zachary felt a little embarrassed by the scene and quickly reached out to take them.
Yael beat him to it. “It’s fine. Just tell us where to put them.”
Zachary pointed to the large pot on the stove. Inside were various dried spices–some they had found in the wild, some traded from other tribes, and some he had spotted on the shaman’s herb rack.
When Bruce heard they could be used for cooking, he immediately gave them to Zachary, even saying that if it wasn’t enough, he’d have Si gather more the next day and deliver them straight to his home.
This mix of spices was more than enough to braise anything and everything.
As soon as the pile of organs went into the pot, Zachary brought over another basin filled with chopped grunt–beast legs, big bones, and feet. The added weight filled the pot to the brim at once.
After placing the heavy lid on top, Matthew crouched down to light the fire. He looked up at Yael and the others, clearly intending to send them away.
The other therians turned their heads, pretending not to see him. They let their gazes wander around the cave before settling neatly on Zachary. After all, he was the one in charge here.
Ethan smiled and asked, “Zachary, is there anything else we can help with?”
Daniel rubbed his hands together. “We’ve got nothing to do, and we’re super bored.”
Kyle wasn’t worried about being chased away–Elias was here, which gave him every reason to stay. Sure enough, he had already stuck close to his partner, tending the fire.
As for Yael, no one could stop him from shamelessly hanging around.
At this point, their eagerness to help was practically overflowing. They were basically begging Zachary to give them something to do.
In truth, Zachary did need help. He smiled and said, “I’m sorry for troubling you all.”
“No trouble at all! It’s not a problem!” they chorused, rolling up their sleeves even higher, boldly meeting Matthew’s gaze now.
There was even a hint of smugness.
Matthew couldn’t be bothered with them. Free labor was free labor, so he might as well use it. The only downside was how much they ate, but food was abundant in the warm season, so it didn’t matter.
Everything for the sausages was ready, except that the meat was tough to mince. The therians each grabbed a stone slab, squatted on the ground, and used bone knives to cut before smashing the meat with rocks, working with great enthusiasm.

Before long, Donald and Bruce arrived as well. Seeing everyone busy, they didn’t say a word. They simply rolled up their sleeves and joined in.
At first, Zachary had tried to stop Bruce from helping. After all, as the shaman, his status in the tribe was second only to the chief. He was responsible for important tasks like gathering herbs and treating illnesses.
Seeing him suddenly helping with things like tending the fire and washing food made Zachary a bit uneasy. But Bruce worked with practiced ease, and over time, Zachary gradually got used to it.
Ever since Donald had saved Jaden and Taylor before, Zachary had been deeply grateful. Whenever he made something tasty, he would send some over to him and Bruce.
After the lean and fatty meat were chopped, they were mixed together and seasoned, filling two large basins.
Jaden and Taylor had gone out earlier for hunting practice. When they came back carrying their prey, they saw the area outside the cave filled with people. Pairs of them stood facing each other–one holding a thin, tube–like casing with both hands, while the other used a long stick to stuff the meat filling into it.
