In front of them were sliced offal and braised meat. Zachary had even brought out some pickled vegetables he had made, which paired perfectly with the rest of the dishes.

Jaden and Taylor were happily gnawing on soft, chewy tails, eating them like duck necks, clearly enjoying themselves.

“Matthew, can I move here and live nearby? We can be neighbors,” Daniel said after swallowing a big chunk of meat, unable to hold it in any longer.

Kyle looked up from the braised trotter he had been halfway through. “Elias and I can move over too. Then we can take turns helping to dig caves.”

“When I find a partner, I’ll come here as well.” Ethan was fully on board. He had already started looking around, scouting for a good spot to dig a cave.

“No, don’t bother.” Matthew rejected the idea immediately.

Having Yael around was already enough of a headache. If Kyle and the others moved over too, this place would turn into a public square. At that point, they wouldn’t even need an excuse–just a casual stroll, and Daniel and the rest would end up right by the cooking pot.

Just imagining that scene made Matthew shake his head, “No one’s allowed to come.”

Yael, who had the advantage of already being here, puffed up with pride. “Exactly. There’s not enough space here, anyway.”

Daniel shot him a look. “You’re enjoying yourself and don’t care if the rest of us suffer, huh!”

Yael spun a big bone in his hand, grinning even wider, acting smug. “Well, I can’t help it. Some people are just lucky. Besides, with Quincy and Taylor here, what do you even have to compete with me?”

Daniel couldn’t take it anymore. He grabbed the gnawed–clean bone, ready to strike Yael’s face with it. Yael reacted quickly, and the two of them started circling around Matthew like they were playing chase around a pillar.

Seeing their greasy hands about to touch his clothes, Matthew stood up and kicked them away. “Get lost. Take your fight somewhere else.”

After taking a few bites of meat, Zachary went back into the cave and came out with some garlic and spring onions. He mixed them with chili powder to make a dipping sauce, and also picked some perillà leaves to wrap the meat.

Not far from the cave, a row of cubs lay sprawled on the rocks. They licked their lips, staring longingly.

Even though Zachary was very kind, the adults had told them not to ask others for food casually, so none of the cubs went over. But it smelled so good.

“Of course, of course!” He cut the meat into small pieces, wrapped them in leaves, and handed them to the neatly lined–up cubs, saying gently, “If you finish it, I’ll cut more for you.”

“Thank you, Zachary!”

“You’re so nice!”

The cubs excitedly held the meat in both hands and ran off to find Taylor and Jaden. They usually played together, and now that they had something delicious, they didn’t forget to share and gather in groups.

It wasn’t just the kids who were tempted—the adults in the tribe wanted some too. They held back for a while, but eventually couldn’t resist. They packed food from their caves into baskets and headed straight to Zachary’s place.

Ryker and Henry ran the fastest. They were about the same age as Donald and quite brave. After rummaging through their homes, they dug out some wheat they had received at some point.

They didn’t know how to eat it. Boiling it directly didn’t taste good, so it had been left fitting in storage, forgotten over time.

Now they were excited. It was exactly the kind of thing Zachary might like, so they happily brought it over.

When Zachary saw it, he was even more delighted than they were. He cut two large pieces of braised meat. “Have them while it’s hot. It tastes even better with garlic and spring onions.”

Henry and Ryker exchanged a glance, both thinking they should trade for more of this in the future—it was basically currency at this point!

As more and more people from the tribe arrived, the pile of goods at Zachary’s doorway grew larger- vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, and all sorts of other produce.

There were even some plants unique to this world that he hadn’t seen much before.
