Chapter 227 Getting Popular

In the end, they even set up an extra stove outside the cave. With three pots going at once, they barely managed to fit everything.
After giving instructions, Zachary yawned and went back inside. Today, Taylor slept with Jaden, while the therians stayed outside to handle smoking the cured meat and sausages, and tending the braised meat
pots.
That night, many people in the tribe couldn’t sleep.
It was already easy to get hungry at night, and with the rich aroma drifting over from the west side, it was pure torture.
In the latter half of the night, Matthew saw that Yael and the others were still full of energy, so he left everything to them. After washing up in the cave, he quietly lifted the blanket, climbed into bed, and pulled Zachary into his arms.
Zachary opened his eyes groggily. “Is it morning already?”
“No.” Matthew kissed his warm, slightly flushed face. “Go back to sleep.”
“Mmm…” Zachary responded softly. Resting his head against Matthew’s chest, he instinctively snuggled closer and closed his eyes again.
At dawn the next day, Yael sat alone outside the cave, holding a braised trotter in his left hand and a chicken leg in his right, wholly focused on eating. He didn’t even notice Matthew and Zachary walking
over.
The fire used for smoking the cured meat and sausages had already gone out completely. All that remained was to hang them by the stove inside the cave, where they could be stored for a long time. As time passed, their flavor would only grow richer.
Matthew nudged Yael’s bottom with the tip of his shoe. “Why are you still here?”
“What if someone steals it?” Yael turned his head. Having eaten his fill, his voice was booming and full of
r
energy.
After speaking, he stood up, stretched, and took another couple of bites of meat, then tilted his chin toward the three large pots nearby. “I left some for you.”
Zachary couldn’t help asking, “Aren’t you tired of it by now?”
Braised meat was delicious, but could their stomachs really handle it? Wouldn’t they get sick of it?
Yael looked as if he had just heard something unbelievable. “Tired of it? How could anyone get tired of such tasty food? I’d eat this every day for a month if I could.”
The three of them worked together to carry the wooden rack of hanging cured meat and sausages into the cave, placing it near the vent by the stone wall beside the stove. The rows hung down like curtains, making it incredibly tempting to look at.

Since Yael and the others didn’t know how to cook them yet, Zachary planned to let them air out for a few days first, then give them some and teach them how to stir–fry.
In spring, the streams were full of small fish and shrimp. Once deep–fried, they tasted amazing, and the younger ones enjoyed them especially. Wrapped in leaves and tucked into a pocket, they became the perfect little snack to eat anytime.
Today, Zachary planned to go with Matthew to a nearby mountain stream to catch some. The stream there was wider and had stronger flow, so there were plenty of fish and shrimp..
Yael had stayed up all night, so he went home and fell into a deep slumber.
Spring brought an abundance of prey, and Taylor and Jaden had more hands–on activities as well. The two of them went out early and returned in the evening, almost like going to school, but they seemed to enjoy it.
After all, before they set out, Zachary and Quincy would always prepare snacks for them. Other kids had some too, but not as many varieties, nor as tasty.
Candy, pastries, cookies, fried meat strips… Every time Taylor and Jaden took them out to eat, they would attract the attention of the other cubs. The envious looks made the two kids incredibly proud—especially Taylor, who couldn’t help being smug.
But Taylor and Jaden weren’t stingy. They shared with others, and their popularity among the cubs grew day by day. They were almost at the point where everyone would respond to them–even the therians leading the group didn’t always have as much influence.
This time, Zachary didn’t ride the black panther. The weather was warm and sunny, and the two of them walked slowly through the forest, hand in hand.
Matthew carried a woven vine basket on his back and held another basket in his hand for catching fish and shrimp. At a glance, he looked just like a typical mountain villager.
The stream flowed gently, clear to the bottom.
Zachary took off his shoes, rolled up his pant legs, and stepped in slowly. The water was a bit cold, but after a while, it felt fine.
୮
Matthew was tall with big feet. As he stood nearby, Zachary deliberately stepped on his large foot. The bones were hard and a bit uncomfortable, but still better than stepping on stones.
Matthew let him step on it, one arm around Zachary’s waist while the other slipped into his clothes.
Zachary was ticklish. He twisted around like an eel, laughing and quickly surrendering, then tried to distract him. “There’s fish! There’s fish!”
After playing around for a bit, the two of them held shallow, flat woven baskets in both hands and slowly moved them through the water. When they spotted fish or shrimp, they carefully lifted the baskets out.
Before long, they had caught quite a lot. They also gathered a pile of river clams and picked a large bunch of water celery, filling the basket to the brim.
Matthew went ashore first, then crouched down halfway and used his clothes to wipe Zachary’s feet.

“Don’t tickle me,” Zachary said, poking him with his toes.
Matthew withdrew his fingers, held Zachary’s ankle, and moved his hand upward, then pulled his rolled- up pant legs back down.
On their way home, they passed by a calm river.
“Wait!” Zachary suddenly thought of something and pulled Matthew over. In front of them was a patch of yellow–brown sediment. It was fine and smooth, and when rubbed between the fingers, it felt very sticky.
