“What is it?” Matthew didn’t crouch down. Instead, he kept a wary eye on the river. There could be dangerous reptiles in the water, and he couldn’t afford to be careless.
“This soil is valuable,” Zachary said, not explaining much. There wasn’t enough time today. Tomorrow, he would meet the tribe’s leader and request for assistance.
There had been a lot of items traded in the tribe the day before, and only now did Zachary have time to sort through them properly.
Most of it was meat. The fruits were mainly mulberries, raspberries, and yellow loquats. There was also a basket of pale green plums and wild apricots, so sour they made people shiver.
There were plenty of shepherd’s purses, bitter greens, and purslane. Since the people of the Black Panther tribe mainly ate meat, they usually gathered fewer types of wild vegetables.
Zachary glanced at Matthew, who was handling the small fish and shrimp, and his eyes shifted slightly. He picked up a green plum and walked over.
“Open your mouth,” he said.
Matthew tilted his head back and obediently did as he was told.
Zachary popped the plum into his mouth and asked with a mischievous smile, “How does it taste?”
Matthew’s brows furrowed almost imperceptibly before quickly smoothing out. His expression remained calm as he replied, “Very sweet.”
“Sweet?” It was Zachary’s turn to be confused. “How could it be sweet? Is something wrong with your sense of taste?”
Matthew stood up calmly, washed his hands, and from beginning to end, never spat out the plum.
Zachary stared closely at his face, trying to spot anything off.
Looking at the person so close to him, Matthew suddenly reached out, grabbed the back of Zachary’s neck, and kissed him.
A sharp sourness instantly spread through Zachary’s mouth. His brows, scrunched together as he slapped at Matthew. “Mm-”
It was so sour his tongue felt like it might fall off. After pulling away, Zachary quickly rinsed his mouth and shot Matthew a glare.
Matthew licked his lips, still savoring the taste. “I think it’s very sweet.”
Zachary replied, “You can have the entire basket of plums tonight.”
But in the end, he couldn’t bear to do that. After all, the plums could be made into preserved fruit or brewed into fruit tea.

Instead, Zachary found Matthew another task, which was to grind that bag of wheat into flour. They had braised meat at home, which would go perfectly with some baked flatbread for meat sandwiches.
So Matthew sat cross–legged by the stone mill and ended up grinding wheat into flour for the entire night.
Dinner that evening was deep–fried small fish and shrimp, a platter of braised meat, stir–fried shredded meat with water celery, and of course, grilled meat.
During the cold spell, the potatoes and sweet potatoes at home had long been eaten up. Their rice and wheat supplies were also running low, which meant their staple food situation was looking grim. The newly ground flour would only last about half a month.
Fortunately, the market would start in half a month, and there should be plenty of grains available then. Zachary thought to himself that he would definitely need to stock up heavily.
As soon as Zachary got up the next morning, he sat by the stone slab near the stove, kneading a basin of white flour dough. He added warm salted water little by little, then mixed in some lard. Soon, a smooth dough formed.
He tore the dough into small portions, rolled them into flat discs, and stuck them directly onto the stones by the fire, letting them bake slowly over low heat.
The reheated braised meat had turned a deep amber color, soft and tender. Zachary picked a large piece with a good balance of fat and lean, skewered it with some sticks, placed it on the stone slab, and chopped it rapidly with a knife.
Matthew and Jaden, having just sharpened their claws, walked in with their tails swaying. The big and small black panthers sat neatly at Zachary’s feet, eyes full of anticipation, like puppies waiting to be fed.
If his hands weren’t covered in braised meat sauce, Zachary would have loved to reach out and pat their
heads.
He suddenly remembered how, when he was a child, kids used to wipe their hands on the village dogs‘
heads.
Zachary looked at Matthew and Jaden instead. Their fur was sleek and jet black–he figured even if he wiped his hands on them, they probably wouldn’t look dirty.
The baked flatbread had a crispy surface with a light golden color. When sliced open, it still gave off steam.
Zachary stuffed the chopped braised meat into the bread, packing it full. The once–flat bread puffed up, and some of the excess meat spilled onto the board.
The father and son beside him stared intently. Without thinking, they stuck out their pink tongues, curling them in the air as if tasting the smell, then pulled them back.
Such meat sandwiches clearly weren’t enough for them in their beast form. With mouths that big, they wouldn’t even need to open wide–they could swallow it whole.
“Turn human and wash your hands before eating,” Zachary said.
Matthew and Jaden immediately dashed into the cave and came back out within two minutes.

Jaden was properly dressed, while Matthew came out bars–chested, only wearing a piece of animal hide around his waist.
Now that the weather was warm and there was a fire in the cave for cooking, the therians ran hot. Even without wearing anything, they didn’t feel cold–in fact, they would even jump straight into the river to bathe.
The sandwiches were rich with filling in every bite. The juices soaked into the bread, the aroma of braised meat mixing with the fragrance of the baked dough. With each crunch, the layers of texture stood out vividly.
The flatbread Zachary made was larger than a typical meat sandwich, but even so, Matthew finished one in just two or three bites. Jaden was a bit slower, taking four or five bites each. A full plate of meat sandwiches was gone by two–thirds in the blink of an eye.
