Chapter 23 A Request

Hearing that, Zachary immediately smiled and said, “Yael, Matthew and I want to invite you to have dinner with us tonight. Bring Quincy over too. He saved me in the lake before, and I still haven’t properly thanked
him.”
“It’s only natural to help each other.” Yael said, though the corners of his mouth were already rising uncontrollably.
He was pretending to be reserved, but Matthew wasn’t going to indulge him. “Then, you-”
“I’ll go bring Quincy right now!” Yael turned and left immediately, not giving Matthew any chance to start trouble.
By now, Taylor had already been fed by Zachary and Jaden until both cheeks were bulging. He lowered his head and kept on chewing, looking just like a little hamster.
When Yael and Quincy came over, Yael was carrying an animal that looked like a duck. He happened to catch it while bathing by the river that afternoon.
“Fresh quacking beast.” Yael dropped it, then immediately crowded around the stove.
Quincy walked over and looked at the food in the pot. “It smells so good, Zachary. I never expected you to be such a good cook.”
“You came just in time. It’s ready to eat.” Zachary smiled and scooped the last pot of fried meat jerky out.
Hearing this, Yael immediately stretched out his hand. “I’ll carry it!”
Seeing how attentive Yael was being, Matthew gave him a look.
Vegetable egg pancakes, rib and mushroom soup, grilled meat, and fried meat jerky–Zachary arranged each dish one by one. “Time to eat!”
Yael impatiently took a bite of the food. The moment he took a bite, he was surprised by how amazing it tasted.
“This is so delicious!”
“What is this soup stewed with?” Quincy drank two big mouthfuls in a row. The fragrance rose to his nose, and the meat was extremely tender as it melted softly in his mouth. Most importantly, there was no metallic smell, only a very fresh and delicious aroma.
“It’s stewed with this and grunt–beast bones.” Zachary lifted the yellow ginger slice from the soup. “This can get rid of the meaty smell.” Then, he remembered, “Though if you eat it directly, the taste is a bit strange. You might not like it.”
“Is this the root of the plant you dug up that day?” Quincy thought for a moment and asked.
Zachary nodded. “There are mushrooms in it too.”
Quincy licked his lips and said, “I can’t believe this kind of plant really can be eaten. It’s so delicious!”

Yael was already eating joyfully. He took a bite of the egg pancake in his hand. It was fragrant and soft.
“Zachary, what is this?”
“It’s made with wild greens and clucking beast eggs.”

“Can clucking beast eggs even be made like this?” Quincy was surprised. They had always either boiled them in water or thrown them into the fire to roast,
Matthew drank the soup in his bowl without saying much, but Yael, who knew him well, understood that he was in a very good mood right now.
Jaden and Taylor sat together with meat jerky in their left hand and egg pancake in their right while lowering their heads to drink two sips of soup.
Yael said in admiration, “Zachary, where did you learn all this? I’ve never seen you make this stuff before.
At this moment, the usually silent Matthew also looked over. Compared to the others‘ simple curiosity, there was something harder to describe in his eyes.
“Ummm…” Zachary didn’t know what to say. After thinking for a moment, he could only make something up. “I don’t know either. Maybe I figured it out on my own before. I didn’t spend much time with you all back then anyway.”
If they asked more, he would use his brain as an excuse. In any case, medicine here was poor, so there was no way to check his words‘ authenticity. Zachary was quite confident that as a modern person, he could fool these people. If that failed, he’d just act like some spirit–medium and bluff them with a bit of feudal superstition..
Whatever Matthew thought, Yael and Quincy believed him. They even comforted Zachary, saying that the way he was now was actually pretty good. All that mattered was that he was healthy.
Still thinking about going into the forest to find new things, Zachary leaned toward Quincy and asked, “Will the tribe be going out to gather anytime soon?”
Quincy swallowed the food in his mouth before replying, “The hunting team just came back, so the tribe has plenty of food right now. Thus, the sub–therians probably won’t be going out for the time being. Why did you ask?”
Zachary replied, “Nothing. I was just thinking that if there was a trip, I’d go out with them and take a look around.”
Yael, who had been completely focused on eating, raised his head when he heard this. Then, he said, “Matthew is here. He can take you.”
Zachary asked, “Don’t you guys have to go out hunting?”
Yael waved his hand and replied, “Even though Matthew and I are very capable, we also have to give the others a chance to contribute to the tribe.”
Quincy translated his words as he said, “The therians in the tribe take turns.”
Hearing this, Zachary looked toward Matthew somewhat uncertainly.

Chapter 23 A Request
“Where do you want to go?” Matthew asked in a calm voice.
“Can we go to the mountain in the cast?” Zachary thought of the mushrooms they had picked last time.
“Okay.”
Initially, Quincy had already decided to have Yael take him and Zachary instead if Matthew wasn’t willing. Thus, he was surprised when he saw Matthew agree so readily. Then, he asked, “Zachary, can I come with you?”
“Of course!” Zachary was very happy for Quincy to come. The thought of going out alone with Matthew made him nervous.
Yael said. “In that case, Matthew and I will take you guys there tomorrow.”
“Oaky.” Zachary nodded.
“What about us? Can we go too?” Taylor asked hurriedly, tugging at Jaden.
“No.” Yael rejected it directly. “It’s dangerous outside.”
“Why can Sire and the others go then?”
“Because they have Matthew and me protecting them.”
Taylor pouted and retorted, “You just think Jaden and I are troublesome.”
Exposed on the spot, Yael wasn’t guilty at all. “The forest is so big. What if the two of you get lost?”
