Matthew pressed the waist chain against him, and the icy touch made Zachary shiver all over.

“It looks beautiful,” Matthew said.

The first thing to catch Matthew’s eye was the flush on his face, shy and warm like evening clouds at sunset. Then came a stretch of fair skin, glowing faintly in the candlelight.

Pearls and gemstones wrapped around Zachary’s wrists, ankles, and neck, each layer catching a soft, steady shimmer. But the most striking piece was still the waist chain, pressed along the curve of his soft, fair waist. It rose and fell gently with his breathing.

“Are you done looking…” Zachary felt embarrassed no matter how he posed, so he ended up kneeling on the bed, hands hovering awkwardly in front of him.

Matthew just stared, unblinking, almost dazed.

Even though he had already imagined Zachary wearing every gemstone while drilling gach piece by hand, seeing it in reality still hit him much harder than he expected.

“What is it?” Zachary finally couldn’t wait for a response and looked down at himself. “If it looks weird, I can take it off.”

Matthew grabbed his hand almost instantly. “Don’t-”

Before he could finish, a warm rush hit his nose.

Zachary gasped and suddenly sat up, the chains on him chiming sharply all at once.

Matthew had started bleeding from his nose, and it was a lot.

In a moment like this, the atmosphere felt a little too intimate for comfort.

“I’ll handle it myself.” Matthew looked slightly embarrassed, pushed him gently back onto the bed with one hand, and strode toward the bathroom.

Zachary wasn’t reassured He grabbed a long coat and hurried after him. “Are you okay? Hey-” The next second, he was lifted off the ground.

After quickly rinsing his face, Matthew tuned around and hoisted Zachary onto his shoulder, carrying him back toward the cave with long strides. “I’m fine.”

Inside the cave, the waist chain kept swaying. Red marks slowly deepened on Zachary’s fair skin.

The gems and pearls were dirty, damp, and sticky.

Zachary was still half out of it, but he mumbled for Matthew to go clean them.

Matthew leaned down and kissed him. “Okay.”

Only then did Zachary finally settle and close his eyes.

Morning birds, early sunlight.

Matthew slipped out of bed quietly. After pulling the blanket back over Zachary, he couldn’t help leaning in for another kiss.

Then he gathered a stack of clothes, beast hide, and the wrapped–up gems and jewelry before heading down to the river in a pretty good mood.

Zachary slept until noon.

Before Jaden’s practical class, he stopped by Taylor’s place and came back once, planning to check on Zachary. But Matthew was already at the entrance and blocked him, tossing him a bag straight away. “Water and food are packed.”

Jaden frowned. “Is Sire not feeling well?”

Matthew said, “No.”

“Alright.” Jaden slung his bag over his shoulder and headed out. His eyes drifted toward the clothesline outside the cave. A bunch of pretty gems and pearls were hanging there, and he couldn’t help glancing at them a couple of times.

When Zachary finally woke up, his whole body ached. His wrists and ankles were covered in red marks, and his waist was especially hard to even think about.

Matthew came in right away after hearing movement. “You’re up. Hungry? Want some water?”

Zachary tried to speak, but his mouth hurt too. The spot Matthew had bitten yesterday had turned into a small mouth ulcer, and even the slightest movement of his tongue stung.

Matthew finally saw the ulcer clearly and frowned slightly. “Should I go get Mr. Bruce to give you something for it?”

Zachary immediately shut his mouth and shook his head. Then he noticed the dark fur drifting around inside the cave and muttered, “You’re shedding again.”

Spring was the shedding season for beasts, and therians were no exception. If they went two days without cleaning, it had already formed a small pile.

“Eat something first,” Matthew said. Then he helped Zachary get dressed, almost coaxing him. “I’ll clean everything up right away.”

Zachary could barely eat his soup without wincing. Watching Matthew sweep the floor just made him more annoyed, so he kept pointing around. “Here. There. And over there.”

Meanwhile, the guilty party cleaned diligently without a single complaint. But when he heard his kissing privileges might be taken away for a while, he tried to bargain a little. It only made things worse, though, like making a bad situation even messier.

Because the mouth ulcer really did hurt.

Zachary glanced at him. “Aren’t you busy today?”
