Once it came to a boil Zachary first ladled out some pure natural soy milk and took a sip. It was rich and full–bodied. He then added some honey to the bowls and passed them around.
Elias held his bowl and licked the foam at the corner of his mouth. “Smells good.”
Yael and the others just chugged it down in big gulps. They did not really slow down to taste it. It was good, and that was enough.
“This is called soy milk,” Zachary smiled as he refilled Elias‘ bowl. “It’s good for mornings.”
Stearn kept rising in thick white clouds from the big pot. Since there was no gypsum for making bean curd, Zachary used wood ash water instead.
He dripped it in slowly and waited as the soy curds gradually set. Once they firmed up, he scooped them out and poured them into a basket. Then he pressed them down with a wooden board and stones to squeeze out the water.
Daniel squatted down and tilted his head. “That’s it?”
“It should be done by the afternoon,” Zachary said with a smile. “Just in time for dinner.”
After that, the therians each grabbed a large stone slab. They used it to crush peeled sweet potatoes and potatoes into a thick paste.
Zachary and Quincy were in charge of collecting the mash. They put it into a basin, added clean water, and kneaded it to wash the starch out.
They filtered the starchy water back and forth, then let it sit to settle. In the end, the white sediment was dried under the sun, turning into starch.
Elias could not really help out, so he wandered over to the chicken coop instead. He grabbed some straw from a nearby pile and fed the animals inside.
Then he noticed a big fat rabbit squeezing under the shelter. The little rabbit was not eating or drinking. It was curled up tightly in a ball.

“Is it sick?” He leaned in closer, and the next second, he caught sight of several red, hairless newborn rabbits.
Elias froze. The moment he realized what he was looking at, he turned and shouted excitedly at Zachary and the others. “It’s giving birth!”
“Giving birth?” Kyle appeared by his side almost instantly. He looked tense. “Are you uncomfortable? Do you hurt?”
Elias stared at him, confused. “Huh?”
Kyle saw that his mate looked fine, then glanced down at his stomach before looking back at the ground.
“Cubs?”

“Not me!” Elias finally reacted, looking completely speechless. He pointed toward the enclosure. “It’s the long–eared beast. Can you be normal?”
“Oh. Right.” Kyle let out a breath, but his chest was still rising and falling. “You scared me.”
The rabbit had another litter of a dozen or so this time, and the original chicken coop was no longer big enough. Since everyone was around, the spent the entire afternoon working on it. They expanded the shed and, under a nearby tree, used wood and bamboo to fence off an area, letting the chicks and ducklings roam freely.
By dusk, Taylor and Jaden returned with their small backpacks on their shoulders, still carrying today’s spoils: a few quacking beasts.
“Hey, you’re back.” Yael took the catch and lifted one for a look. “They’re pretty big. Zachary, do we need to butcher them first?”
Zachary was holding a bone knife, about to cut bean curd. He glanced over and said, “Yeah, go ahead and prep them. We’re roasting them tonight. Just don’t cut the belly too deep.”
Yael immediately grinned. “Got it!”
Taylor leaned his fluffy little head over next to Zachary, staring at the soft white blocks in the basin, and asked curiously what it was.
“Bean curd.” Zachary smiled and cut a small piece, feeding it to the cub.
“Smooth and soft,” Taylor said after tasting it carefully. “But it doesn’t really taste like anything.”
“It needs some seasoning.” Zachary pointed toward the table inside the cave and said to the two cubs, “There’s fruit tea on the table. Go drink some.”
“Okay.” Taylor instantly grabbed Jaden and ran into the cave.

taste much on its own, they still ate it.
ро Yael worked fast and had already plucked the quacking beasts clean. As long as it had to do with food, he could handle any task with perfectionist precision.
Outside the cave, everything had already been tidied up. Daniel and Ethan squatted by the ground, starting a fire. Taylor carried over a large bundle of firewood. Donald and Bruce were adding water to the large pot, while Quincy and Elias sat by the stone table getting the dinner fixings ready.
The two cubs saw that the rabbit had given birth again and stayed by the nest for a long while, watching They even picked out the fruit slices from their fruit tea and fed them to the rabbit.
Zachary planned to make crispy roast duck, something he had once seen in an online tutorial and had even tried to recreate in his rented apartment. It couldn’t compare to restaurant versions, since it lacked all the additives, but it still tasted pretty good.
Matthew helped him prep by giving the cleaned quacking beasts a full salt massage, then adding a sauce he had mixed earlier and rubbing it in thoroughly to let it marinate.

Yael peeked in. “The water’s boiling.”
“Alright.” Zachary scooped out the boiling water with a bowl and kept pouring it over the duck. The loose skin tightened instantly, becoming firm and glossy. “Matthew, help me hold the quacking beast upside down.”
Then he grabbed a handful of mixed apple slices and onion strips from the basin, along with cloves, ginger slices, bay leaves, and various spices, and stuffed everything straight into the duck’s cavity.
