Finally, they sealed the openings with thin wooden skewers, brushed the outsides with a little honey water, and set them over the fire to roast, turning them back and forth to cook evenly.
That important job fell to Yael and Daniel. The two of them took it seriously, keeping a close eye on the quacking beast as it roasted and watching every color shift to make sure both sides browned evenly.
Next came the star of today’s feast: bean curd.
The bean curd was sliced into thin slabs and pan–fried until golden on both sides. Minced ginger and garlic were first hit with hot oil, releasing their aroma. Then came shredded chilies and wood ear

Once everything had simmered together, Zachary reduced the sauce over high heat and finished it off with a handful of chopped garlic chives. The smell alone was enough to make mouths water.
There was also bean curd with minced meat, chilled bean curd with scallions, and, because there were so many therians to feed, he added stir–fried shredded potatoes, spicy sautéed dried squid, braised dried fish, and finally a large pot of seafood broth.
The moment Zachary got to work, every eye in the cave drifted toward him.
With those practiced movements and flawless technique, he looked less like someone cooking dinner and more like a magician performing a miracle.
In Yael and the others‘ eyes, he practically glowed.
Of course, Zachary was only responsible for the actual cooking. Chopping ingredients, tending the fire, cleaning up, and every other task were handled by everyone else.
Even the seasonings were handed directly to him by Kyle and the others.
The table wasn’t nearly large enough, so Yael and Daniel immediately hauled over several stone slabs to extend it. They even declared that one day they would build Zachary a proper dining table, one bigger than a bed.
The moment every dish was finally set out, the rich aroma spread through the entire cave and the surrounding area.
The roasted quacking beast had skin so crisp that it crackled beneath the knife. Once carved open, the cavity released a mouthwatering blend of fruit, vegetables, spices, and savory juices.
The bean curd, which had been fairly mild on its own, had transformed completely under Zachary’s hands. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, and soaked with flavor, it became one of the most popular dishes on the table.
The chilled bean curd with scallions was especially refreshing and cut through the richness perfectly, earning unanimous praise.

Firclight flickered in the wind as everyone gathered around the hastily expanded table and ate to their hearts‘ content.
Daniel sighed happily. Every time I think I’ve already tasted the best food in the world, Zachary somehow makes something even better the next time.”
Ethan stuffed a huge piece of roast duck to his mouth. Only after swallowing did he finally speak, “This quacking beast died for a good cause. Chief Alfred’s already talking about digging more caves and putting up shelters. We’d better raise a lot more quacking beasts.”
Kyle kept piling food onto Elias‘ plate. Seeing his mate eating so well put him in an even better mood. “Eat more. You’ve gotta keep your strength up.”
Taylor and Jaden were completely focused on their giant duck legs. Paired with a sip of warm, lightly sweet seafood broth, the meal felt perfect.
Bruce, meanwhile, was a true food enthusiast. He spread out one of the flatbreads Zachary had warmed earlier, layered it with onions and scallions, added slices of crispy roast duck dipped in sauce, then rolled everything together.
One bite later, he had accidentally invented an entirely new way to eat it.
“Here.” He quickly rolled up another one and stuffed it into Donald’s mouth. “It tastes even better this way.” Donald chewed for a moment, then nodded repeatedly/“You’re right.”
Yael didn’t even need to be mentioned.
Standing next to the refined Quincy and Zachary, he was basically like a beast that had gone three days without food. His eyes were glowing. His eating sticks were moving so fast they were almost leaving afterimages.
Matthew wasn’t in a rush at all. He even set his eating sticks down on purpose and waited for his mate to feed him now and then.
Zachary hadn’t dared to eat at first because his mouth hurt too much. Later, he figured he might as well just push through it, and slowly the pain actually started to ease up. He couldn’t tell if the mouth ulcer had backed off or if he had just gone numb to it.
The aroma drifted farther and farther in the wind. It was mealtime. The tribe members stood at their cave entrances with bowls in hand. They couldn’t help glancing toward the west side of the tribe. Suddenly, their own food didn’t seem as tasty as it had before.
Yael and the others were fully committed to the clean plate policy. They even drank every last drop of broth in the pot. After the meal, they still had some of Zachary’s little snacks to round things off.
After everyone finished cleaning up everything inside and outside the cave, they waved goodbye and walked home under the moonlight, feeling satisfied.
After washing up, Zachary sat cross–legged on the bed. The pain in his mouth came back again, making
him frown hard.

He looked at Matthew and muttered, “I used to bite you, too. How come you were never like this?”
Matthew walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. “Maybe because I’m a therian. My saliva helps wounds heal.”
Zachary drooped his eyes. “That’s not fark
Matthew said, “I can help you.”
“How?” Zachary asked. The moment he said it, he already knew it. Still, the pain was bad enough that he was willing to try anything. He nodded anyway. “Just be gentle.”
Matthew leaned in a little closer. “Mm.”
He treated it very seriously, gently licking along the injured area.
Zachary felt both pain and itch at the same time. He pushed him a little. “Okay, that’s enough…” “The longer it is, the better the effect.” Matthew held his face and said very seriously, “Don’t move.” His tone and expression looked a bit like a doctor’s.
Zachary covered his mouth with his hand and shook his head. “Your tongue has betrayed your thoughts.” Matthew’s gaze dropped slightly. “Then, something else? It would work even better than saliva healing.”
“I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.” Zachary saw right through him. He quickly pulled the blanket up and lay down.
Only the back of his fluffy head was facing him.
