Chapter 298 We’re Family

The marketplace in the tribe had been growing larger and larger. Food was now almost fully self–sufficient. The chief even marked out another area, preparing to expand further.
Following Zachary’s suggestion, they also planned to build some defensive structures. After all, people were unpredictable–things were fine now, but no one knew what the future might bring.
Elias rarely went out anymore, and Kyle stayed by his side almost every moment. He spent his days guarding his mate. Even so, sometimes he would suddenly wake from his sleep in a panic, which made Elias worry that Kyle might wear himself out first.
Meanwhile, Zachary had been dealing with a bit of a headache lately. As the weather grew hotter, the two panthers at home were shedding badly. Although Matthew and Jaden tried their best to shed outside–and even shook themselves clean before turning back into human form and entering the cave–Zachary could still pick up plenty of fur with just a casual touch.
Left with no choice, Zachary made himself a large comb. Every morning, after Matthew and Jaden finished sharpening their claws, he would sit on a stool and take turns grooming the two panthers crouched by his legs.
He didn’t throw away the fur he combed out. Instead, he gathered it all together, and over time it filled a small basket. Whenever he had free time, he would take a bone needle and poke at it, shaping it bit by bit. Conveniently, he had a real black panther nearby as reference.
Jaden leaned over, staring at the little black lump in Zachary’s hands for quite a while. Only when two small, blunt ears took shape did he suddenly understand. “Sire, are you making a little figurine?”
Zachary smiled and nodded. “Guess who I’m making.”
The child lowered his gaze, the corners of his lips lifting slightly, a little shy. He spoke softly, “Is it me?”
Even though they were together every day, Zachary still found himself charmed by his cub from time to time. He set aside what he was holding, leaned forward, and gave Jaden a light kiss on the forehead, then cupped his face and gently squished it. “That’s right. Your beast form is beautiful. I want to make it.”
Jaden’s smile grew brighter as he leaned into Zachary’s arms. “No, your beast form is beautiful.”
utiful.”
Not far away, Matthew heard this. His expression didn’t change much, but that night, he somehow brought back a large bundle of fur and placed it into the basket in front of Zachary.
“Why did you shed so much?” Zachary was surprised at first, then immediately grew concerned. “Are you already going bald at your age?”
Matthew explained, “This isn’t from my head. I won’t go bald.”
Zachary stood on tiptoe, holding Matthew’s head in both hands. “Don’t move. Let me take a look.”
Matthew lowered his head cooperatively, letting Zachary check carefully. As always, it was thick and jet
black.
Zachary felt relieved. Smiling, he ruffled his partner’s hair before going back to his craft.

Matthew watched from the side for a while, then shifted into his beast form and quietly lay down beside Zachary’s legs, occasionally glancing at the felt panther Zachary was shaping.
When Zachary brought out a tuft of wool dyed golden, the black panther on the ground suddenly lifted its head. A flicker of surprise passed through his eyes, and his tail began to sway slightly.
He was making a black panther with golden eyes!
Matthew rubbed affectionately against Zachary’s calf. His warm, damp tongue curled around Zachary’s ankle, licking it gently again and again.
Zachary smiled faintly, lifting what he was holding. “This mighty panther is you, silly.”
Matthew let out a low rumble. If not for his large size, he would have thrown himself straight into Zachary’s arms.
The two black panther dolls–one big and one small–were placed in a very noticeable spot inside the
cave.

Matthew and Jaden stood in front of them, staring for quite a while. Then, without a word, they ran off together to the tribe’s livestock area, chasing the baa beasts and vigorously pulling wool from them before bringing back a huge pile.
The next afternoon, when Zachary woke from his nap, he opened his eyes to see the father and son standing by the bed, staring at him without blinking.
He asked, “What’s wrong?”
Jaden hugged the basket of wool and said expectantly, Dad, make a lynx. That way, we can all be together.”
Matthew nodded in agreement. “We’re family, after all.”
So that entire afternoon, Zachary kept poking and shaping until a beautiful lynx was finally made. Only then did the father and son nod in satisfaction and place it between the two black panthers.
That night, as they slept, Matthew habitually moved closer. In winter, he was like a warm, comforting heater–but in summer, after only a short while, Zachary felt too hot, as if he were wrapped in a thick, warm fur blanket.
The moment Matthew wasn’t paying attention, the person in his arms quietly shifted away, inching toward the side, practically pressing himself against the stone wall like a gecko to sleep.
Matthew pulled him back again, but before he could even close his eyes, Zachary had already rolled away
once more.
A soft sigh echoed in the quiet cave.
Zachary turned his head. “What’s wrong?”
Matthew lowered his gaze. “Did I do something wrong today? I’m sorry.”
Zachary looked confused. “No. What’s wrong?”

“It’s a bit warm here. Zachary turned back, reaching out in the darkness until he found Matthew’s lips, then leaned in and gave him a light kiss.
