It all came together in my head then. Everything I had suffered before passing out, it had not been the sex. It had been the pill. The very thing that had carried me through that stage was the thing trying to kill me now.

I managed to sit up, slowly, carefully, and fixed her with the hardest look I could manage. "Who sent you? Why did you try to kill me?"

She laughed again, waving a hand. "Oh please. Do not be so dramatic. What would I gain from killing you? I saved your life, and I am yet to hear you say thank you."

"Then what are you doing in my house?"

"From experience, I knew you would suffer. It is your first time taking the pill, after all, and I have seen what that does to a body." She shrugged. "So I did a little digging, found out where you were staying, and came to check on you. I knocked. No answer. The door was unlocked, so I let myself in and found you naked and unconscious on the floor. I performed CPR on you, carried you to the bed, and woke you up. You are welcome."

I opened my mouth to retort, and a sharp sting bit the back of my thumb. I looked down and saw a thin line of blood welling from a tiny puncture.

My eyes went wide, and the woman gave me a lazy smile. "Relax. I pricked your finger as part of the process of waking you up. Standard practice."

I glared at her. "Get out of my room."

"Then why did you give it to me?" I demanded, anger rising through the fear. "You knew it was dangerous, and you gave it to me anyway?"

"I never forced you to take it. And I was trying to save your life." Her voice lost its teasing edge. "Do you know what usually happens at that hall, every now and then? It ends in tragedy more often than not. My best friend and I once ended up in that cage, in that exact position, with those men closing in. Someone offered me the pill. I took it, and I survived. My best friend refused. She said she would not put something she did not know into her body." Cara paused, and something flickered across her face. "She did not survive the night. Those men, they are animals once they get going. The pill made it a piece of cake for me. So you ought to be thanking me, not acting like an ingrate."

I went quiet, turning her words over and over. Was she telling the truth? Would I not have survived the orgy on my own? I was not weak. There was nothing I could not survive. I had sold my body to worse men for worse reasons and walked away smiling. And yet I had to admit the pill had made every second of that experience enjoyable. Without it, I might have been screaming. Without it, I might have broken, and broken girls did not always make it off that stage.
