Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 521

I just hadn't realized. I hadn't realized what I was carrying until I dropped it.

I didn't know when I did it, but I found I had slid down until I was squatting on the bare floor and dropped the tray into my lap, my face buried in my hands, and I was crying so hard I couldn't stop, I couldn't even breathe, just the heavy shaking, the tears and the taste of the mascara on my tongue and my ruined heart.

I had handed Dominic to Celeste. I had let the best man in the world slip through my fingers, that was all there was to say about it. I foolishly let him go.

My life began falling apart only after Dominic left me. If only I could get off this island, I would give everything I had to get him back. I would fight for him to the last drop of my blood, more than my pride, more than my body, nothing else. I would take him back and I would love him the way I should have, I would make him see. And no one anywhere, not Celeste, not anyone, would get in my way and get away with it while I was breathing.

But how would that ever happen? How would I fight for anything from inside this godforsaken island prison? Five years of naked, high heels, and strangers?

I was still crying, folded small and breaking into the room full of light and pool tables, when I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I thought it was Lola. On instinct, I wanted to wipe my eyes. I swallowed hard, pushed the mascara back, got to my feet, and turned, faking the smile I had tried to rehearse when I had to serve next, ready to lie.

But the woman standing there wasn't Lola.

Then she turned and walked away, calm as the rest of the island, and left me standing naked in the gold light, tray gone, smile gone, face streaked.

My eyes went wide. I stared at the space she had filled.

Was it possible? Could she really get me off this island? Could I leave, could I be free of the men and the heels, and get the opportunity, the one wild chance, to get my husband back?
