Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 571

SCARLETT

Sparrow was quiet for a while. He just stood there, staring at me. Silence ran between us, stretching until eventually, his face broke into a smile. "I love your honesty and confidence, Scarlett. It's a good thing I am not one of your enemies then."

I smiled back at him. "Well, I do know you will not hurt Tasha. You already made a promise to me, and I strongly believe you are a man of your word. Besides, I have two favorite people in this world, and you are one of the people on the list."

He chuckled softly, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. "Lucky me, I guess."

I shrugged, looking out over the water where the lights of Dominic's yacht flickered like stars. "To be honest, I have never really opened up to anyone the way I have opened up to you. I don't know why. For some reason, I just feel really vulnerable tonight. I have this feeling that there is something wrong but I don't know what it is. Maybe I am not doing something right. Maybe I am doing something to hurt Tasha."

"What are you talking about?" Sparrow's tone was firm. "Tasha is lucky to have you. Only a few people in the world would go to the extent you have gone to for her. Trust me."

"I guess you are right."

She was obviously furious with me. I considered sitting down at my laptop, tracking her phone’s signal and going to find her right away, but I forced myself to take a slow breath. If she was still out with her new friends, showing up uninvited would only make things worse. She would accuse me of trying to control her. I decided to give her a little time to cool down before she came back.

Sparrow had already disappeared into his own room, so I went into mine to take a hot shower. Other than a glass of champagne, I had not eaten a single bite at the engagement party, and my stomach felt hollow. Under the warm spray, as the water washed the heavy makeup from my skin, my mind drifted back to the moment I had walked out of the hotel suite in that black dress and caught Sparrow staring at me like he was seeing a ghost.

A small smile touched my lips. Of course he looked. That was just Sparrow. After all, what else did he live for besides women and sex? I turned off the water, dried off, and slipped into a simple, comfortable cotton gown. Since I had not seen Sparrow eat anything either, I decided to go over to his room and offer to cook a late dinner for both of us. I opened my bedroom door and froze.
