Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 597

"No. It would ruin the surprise." His voice was smiling. "Do you still trust me?"

"I trust you completely. I'm just curious."

"Then be patient, love. You'll get the surprise soon enough."

Love. He called me love. My stomach did a slow, pleasant roll, and I said nothing, letting the darkness and the hum of the engine wrap around us as he drove, reaching over every few minutes to rest his hand on my knee, a quiet reassurance that he was still there.

Eventually the car stopped. He helped me out, his hand firm around mine, and led me forward. I heard a door open, felt a change in the air, cooler and still, and then he guided me into a room and sat me down in a chair.

"Now." The blindfold came off, and I blinked, my eyes adjusting to the light. The room was full of people. Men and women, railings of clothes, makeup boxes open on tables, cases of hair tools, mirrors with bulbs around them like a film set.

"What are you up to, Kingsley?"

He leaned against the doorframe, arms folded, looking entirely too pleased with himself. "These people are here to get you ready. And afterward, I'll still need to cover your eyes again. It's not time for you to see the surprise."

I smiled at him, helpless and happy. "Okay." I sat down, and they went to work. The makeup was simple, but it was applied with so much technique I could feel myself being transformed with every stroke of the brush. When they were done and I finally looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. I looked like a princess.

They dressed me in white, a long flowing gown that whispered against the floor, and when I turned, he was still standing by the door, watching me, his arms folded, his eyes soft. "You look breathtaking."

"Thank you for making me look so beautiful."
