Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 631

SERAPHINE

Felix held on to me like I might vanish if he let go, his arms wrapped around me so tight I could feel his heart hammering against my cheek. The hug went on long enough that even I started to find it awkward, and then he seemed to realize it too. He pulled back, blinking at me like he still couldn't believe I was real.

I glanced past his shoulder at Sierra, frozen in the doorway, and then I looked back at Felix and let more tears come. Fake tears, but they rolled down my cheeks just the same, hot and convincing.

"You're the only one who can help me now," I whispered. "I have nowhere else to go."

His eyes dropped to the luggage piled at my feet, then back to my face. He opened his mouth to speak, but Sierra chose that moment to step out fully, clearing her throat like she was announcing herself to a boardroom.

"Babe, why are you outside?" She smiled at him, sweet as syrup, and completely ignored me. "Come inside. Let's continue from where we left off."

Felix barely looked at her. He kept his hands on my shoulders, his thumbs pressing in like he was checking that I was solid. "What happened to you? Where have you been?"

"I'm exhausted." My voice cracked at the edges. "Can I just go inside and rest?"

He nodded immediately and reached for my bags. But when he turned toward the door, Sierra was standing right there, blocking the way, her arms crossed.

"What do you think you're doing?"

"Why are you blocking the way?" He sounded genuinely confused, like the idea of a woman refusing him entry to his own house had never once occurred to him. "Seraphine has been gone for a long time. Nobody knows what happened to her. Now she's back with her luggage and she needs my help. I've known her for most of my life. If she needs me, I'll be there for her."
