Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 632

"I truly have nowhere else to go," I sobbed into his chest. "But if Sierra hates me this much, then I'll leave. I'll sleep under a bridge if I have to."

I made to turn away, and his hand closed around my wrist like a cuff.

"You're not leaving." His voice came out flat. "This is my house, and I have the final say."

Sierra stared at him, her mouth opening and closing, no sound coming out.

I left my luggage and walked over to her, reaching out to take both her hands in mine. I held them gently, tenderly, like I was holding something precious, and let fresh tears stream down my face.

"Sierra, you're a woman like me." My voice wobbled beautifully. "I know you have your doubts, but I promise you, my life is in danger. I really have nowhere else to go. Please, just let me stay safe for a few days until I figure out what to do. Please, I promise I won't do anything that would cause any harm to you or to your husband."

And while I spoke, while I looked into her eyes with all the sincerity I could manufacture, my thumbs pressed deep into the backs of her hands, my nails digging in hard enough to leave crescents in her skin.

She gasped and snatched her hands away.

I let the motion carry me. I stumbled backward, flailing, my feet catching on nothing, and then I was falling, dropping toward the ground like a flower cut down in its prime.

Felix caught me before my back touched the floor, scooping me up like I weighed nothing, cradling me against his chest. I turned my face to Sierra, wide-eyed and trembling, letting my voice crack on every syllable.

"Why? Just because I begged for accommodation, you pushed me away?"

Felix set me gently on my feet and rounded on Sierra, his hand rising in the air. "Who gave you the right to push her? Who?"

Hot tears spilled down Sierra's cheeks, but she didn't flinch. She lifted her chin and looked him straight in the eye. "Go ahead. Hit me. Maybe you'll kill our baby again."
