I sat on the couch, still holding the glass of juice Felix had pressed into my hands, and let the silence stretch until it became uncomfortable. That was the trick. Let the other person speak first. Let them fill the quiet with their own worry.

Finally, he asked, "What really happened? I've been trying to reach you all this time, but I couldn't."

I looked down at the glass, then back at him, and let my face crumple. "If I tell you the truth about what happened to me, you won't believe me."

He shook his head slowly. "Try me, Seraphine."

"I was kidnapped." My voice came out small, trembling. "I was in my home when I heard a knock at the door. I went to open it, and that was it. When I woke up, I had been taken to an island. Felix, it's the most horrible place in the world. They did horrible things to me. Most of the time I was out of my mind. They drugged me, they gave me injections over and over, and they made me do things, things I normally would never have done. I wasn't in my right mind. Those people had guns, they had weapons, and they took advantage of me."

My voice broke, and I let the tears come. "Even my phone. My phone was taken away from me. And it was all Celeste. I didn't want to believe she could do such a thing, after all, she's a woman like me. But I overheard one of the men making a phone call, and they called her name. Felix, I've been through hell."

He was watching me, his face tight.

"All the money I worked for, all the money in my account, it's gone. When they took me to that place, they took my phone and wiped my accounts. I fought so hard. Once I regained a little sanity, I was able to run away. It was very difficult, but I found a way out. Those men are still chasing me. They've been looking for me everywhere.
