Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 652

Julian has been arrested for gassing my mother, almost killing her, and for other crimes too. Just you wait. You and this bitch will join him as accomplices. And your first charge will be selling Mom's house, not just to an enemy, but doing it without her knowledge or consent."

His face drained of color so fast I almost enjoyed it.

"No, no, Celeste, you're getting it all wrong." He shook his head frantically. "I urgently needed five hundred thousand, and I couldn't get it anywhere else. Every friend I turned to refused me. When I found a buyer for the house, I told him my mother was still living there and would be for the next six months.

He assured me he would be out of the country until next year. He said he wasn't moving in, he was buying it purely as an investment, and Mom could live there as long as she wanted this year. The man I sold it to wasn't Julian. I swear it wasn't Julian. And I figured in six months I'd have enough to buy the house back, or buy her a better one. I only sold it the day before yesterday, as a last resort. I never planned to hide it from her. I wanted to tell her face to face, but I hadn't gotten the chance yet, because Seraphine was sick, and..."

"Your excuses are as pathetic as you are." I looked at him the way you look at something stuck to your shoe. "No matter how noble you try to make this sound, it doesn't change what you put Mom through. You failed as a brother and you failed our mother as a son, the same way you failed Sierra's dead child as a father. You're a pathetic excuse for a human being. And my heart aches, Felix, because I'm the one who has to look Mom in the eyes and tell her that her so-called son is the reason she ended up unconscious in a hospital."

His eyes went red and glassy. "Is she okay? Is Mom okay now? Is she still in the hospital?"

"You and your mistress should worry more about what you'll say to the judge when you're arrested as accomplices to Julian's crimes." I turned my stare on Seraphine, who had gone very quiet, the smugness draining from her face as worry crept into her eyes.

Good. Worry her. "Because I won't rest until my mother gets justice."

I looked back at my brother one last time.

"Felix, you make me sick."

I turned and walked to my car. Behind me, the guards released the two of them and followed.

In the car, I made calls. Three of them, back to back, and by the time the third ended, I'd bought my mother a mansion.

It was bigger than the old house. More beautiful, too, white stone and tall windows and a garden that rolled green and soft behind a wrought iron fence, and this time I took zero chances. I put the deed directly in my own name. Then I arranged the movers, and in no time, nearly everything from Mom's apartment had been carried out of Julian's property and installed under my roof.
