Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 666

I typed fast, thumb jabbing the screen.

"Scarlett, my trainer won't be available in the evening today, so I'm going this morning instead. I'll be with you by afternoon and I'll stay the whole night, I promise."

I tossed the phone into my bag, hauled the strap onto my shoulder, and hurried out of the bedroom.

Halfway down the stairs, the front door opened.

Sparrow walked in.

I stopped dead, one foot on a tread, and stared at him like I'd never seen a man in a suit before. He was already talking before the door clicked shut, and his face, his whole face, was lit up. Beaming. Which was so wrong for that face that it took me a second to recognise it.

"There you are. Good news. The doctor says Scarlett can be discharged tomorrow."

The smile I'd pinned on nearly fell off.

"That's, that's great." My voice had a wobble in it and he didn't hear it, thank God, because he was already taking his jacket off, hanging it over the bannister with the ease of a man home to stay.

"She told me you were coming early." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Something's come up, my hands are full for the rest of the day. So you two can have the whole day. Keep her happy, keep her laughing, and keep her off her phone before she starts reorganising her hospital ward."

I bit my lip. He'd taken two steps toward the stairs, so it was now or never.

"Sparrow?"

He turned back.

"Actually, I, I urgently need to meet with my fitness coach this morning. She's already waiting for me. It won't take long. Once I'm done, I'll go straight to the hospital and stay with Scarlett the whole day."

He looked at me like I'd announced the sky was green.

"Your fitness coach?"
