Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 672

Tears prickled hot and instant. Not from the bag. From everything.

I couldn't leave it like this. Today was the day. It had to be today.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again, harder, then again, rapid and desperate, a woman with not much left to lose standing in a hallway trying to negotiate with a door.

It finally opened, and Bryan stood there with the phone back at his ear, mid-call, glaring at me like I was a stain.

"What part of leave did you not understand? You have two seconds to disappear, or I release your sex video."

The video.

I nodded so fast my wig shifted, spun on my heel, and walked away at the fastest speed that still qualified as walking.

I didn't stop until I was outside the club, and there, in the open air, with traffic noise and daylight and no monsters in sight, I finally breathed.

A heavy, defeated, whole-body sigh.

Twice now. Twice I'd stood within touching distance of that phone and come away empty-handed. The task was simple. Insert small object. That was the entire assignment. A toddler could do it. And yet here I was, zero for two, with a bruised hip and a bag thrown at me like charity.

Then I saw the cab parked a short distance up the street, and behind the wheel, unmistakable even in sunglasses, Daniel.

I walked toward it at a normal, unconcerned pace, leaned down to the window like any customer, gave an address, then opened the door and got in. Seatbelt. Engine. Movement.

Daniel glanced sideways at my face, and whatever he saw there answered his question before he asked it.

"I did everything I could." My hands were still shaking, so I folded them in my lap. "I was so close, Daniel. The chip was literally going in. His hands were off the phone, everything was perfect, and then the phone rang."
