But now that Elio's life was on the line, Clara couldn't give a damn about Emmett's potential wrath.
Clara grabbed her bag and bolted. She didn’t even make it to the front door before running into Ricardo. "Where are you off to in such a rush, Ms. Calloway?"
"I've got stuff to deal with. A friend of mine is sick; I’ve gotta go see him."
Ricardo eyed her panicked expression, "Want me to tell Mr. Melendez? He knows a bunch of top-notch doctors, so he might be able to help."
Clara knew what he was getting at. She hesitated for a moment, then blurted out to Ricardo, "It's a guy friend I'm going to see. If you don't want Mr. Melendez to blow a fuse, you better keep it to yourself!"
"A guy friend?"
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna betray Mr. Melendez! But the guy once did me a favor, so I’ve gotta return his kindness!"
Ricardo was taken aback, obviously not anticipating such bluntness from Clara, leaving him stuck between a rock and a hard place.
"But if Mr. Melendez finds out, I'm toast!"
"Relax. If you don't tell him anything, he won't know. Let's keep this under wraps. I'll be back as soon as I finish lending my friend a hand."
"Alright then."
Ricardo nodded; after all, Clara had made things pretty clear.
"If Mr. Melendez comes looking for me, you’ve gotta get a hold of me right away. I'll be back ASAP! Can you smooth things over and buy me some time?"
"Alright..."
Clara hightailed it to Elio's place in her car. But when she got there, she found the door locked.
She knocked, but no one answered, so she quickly dialed Elio's number.
The phone just kept ringing, but no one picked up.
