Newell smirked with a hint of disdain, "Chill out, Leah. Why the rush? I’m not saying that I wouldn't do it. It's just that we need to talk about the price. I haven't quite made up my mind. That 10% share you gave me last time? It's practically gone. Tossing me another 10% now, will ya? Won't even make a dent in my debts!"
Leah's patience snapped at his words, "You're just trying to bleed me dry! You think I can't ruin you?"
"I believe you could, but if I go down, you're going down with me. We're both in the same boat here, so cut the threats."
Her fists clenched, a wave of anger washing over her. She wanted Newell gone, wiped off the face of the planet, but she still needed him for the antidote.
Elio was no help; he was out of his depth.
"Just spit it out. How much do you want? Stop beating around the bush!"
He seemed somewhat taken aback by her bluntness. "Well, since you're being so direct, let's say 50 million dollars. You give me that, and I refine the formula on the spot. How's that?"
"50 million? You're off your rocker!"
Leah couldn't help but retort, "I'm not doing this just for myself, you know. If we get caught, neither of us will get a dime! Think about it, the Melendez family has roots everywhere. What can't they uncover? We could be scratching each other's backs here. You scratch mine, I scratch yours, and we both sleep tight at night. But if you don't let me rest easy, don't expect to be lounging in peace yourself!"
"I think I'll return that line right back to you. Honestly, if Emmett's out of the picture, you'll be the one resting easy, future Mrs. Melendez! Even if you give me the 50 million, it's just a temporary fix for me. You, on the other hand, stand to benefit for a lifetime. Don't think I can't see through your game. I want that money, not a penny less. If you don't like it, no need to call again. We've got nothing more to talk about."
With that, he hung up, leaving Leah fuming and grinding her teeth.
Rose glanced at her indifferently, "Don't know. What do you want her for?"
Leah bristled at the maid's attitude, "Watch how you speak to me. I'm the future lady of the Melendez house!"
Rose couldn't help but chuckle, "Future lady? That's not now, is it? I serve the Melendez family, not you. Do you sign my paychecks? Done me any favors? Why should I listen to you?"
"You... You can’t talk to me like this!"
"That's just it. If you're looking for Clara, go find her yourself. That's how I talk. If you don't like it, there's the door. This is my room, and even the butler can't tell me what to do in here!"
