Charles Ross's expression was thunderous.
Cynthia's face darkened with equal fury.
The moment the judges announced the results, Arthur Sinclair trembled.
He turned to Seraphina, his eyes instantly turning red.
"Seraphina... I won."
His voice was hoarse, laced with uncontrollable shaking.
Seraphina squeezed his hand. "Yes, Dad. You won."
Arthur's tears finally fell. He wiped his face haphazardly with his sleeve, caught between a sob and a laugh.
He had won.
He had protected his innocence.
Seraphina turned back to face the barrage of camera flashes.
The reporters aimed their lenses right at her.
Taking a deep breath, her voice rang out crystal clear. "This is the truth. My father didn't plagiarize. His hands are clean."
The reporters frantically snapped photos, the flashes blurring into a sea of white light.
Some scribbled furiously in their notepads, while others shoved forward with voice recorders.
Not far away, Dominic Lockwood stood with his arms crossed, watching Seraphina with an unreadable expression.
Lily stood by his leg, a bright smile on her small face.
She looked at Seraphina with sparkling eyes.
It turned out her mother could be impressive too.
She instinctively took a step forward, wanting to call out to her.
But she quickly stopped herself, pressing her lips together and pulling her foot back.
Cynthia didn't look happy today, so she figured she better not upset her.
Seraphina happened to glance over, catching her daughter's every movement.
She closed her eyes, swallowing the bitter lump in her throat.
Then, holding Arthur's hand, she headed straight to the HR department.
The sunlight outside was blinding as they stepped through the main doors.
Arthur remained quiet the entire way.
Seraphina glanced at him. "Dad, don't dwell on it. You're at retirement age anyway. It's a good time to rest."
Arthur forced a tight smile. "Yeah, I suppose. Leaving without a tarnished reputation is the best possible outcome."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn tool case.
The surface was polished smooth from years of use, its edges rounded off—a trusted companion for more than half his life.
He ran his thumb over it, letting out a soft sigh.
"It's just a shame about all those bonuses... and the project stipends. All gone."
Watching her father's wistful gesture, Seraphina's gaze sharpened with clarity.
As their car turned into the alley near their neighborhood, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes.
The driver cursed. Seraphina looked up, her pupils contracting sharply.
Seven or eight heavily built men dressed in black stood at the mouth of the alley, completely blocking their path.
