"No one else is coming today. Let's just have dinner with her. You haven't spent time with her in a while, and she won an award today; she deserves some encouragement."
Seraphina found the remark utterly laughable.
She had told him those exact words countless times in the past, yet he had never possessed the patience to hear her out.
Now, the tables had turned, and he was the one lecturing her.
Seraphina's heart remained encased in ice, but looking down at Lily's hopeful face, she couldn't bring herself to crush the child's spirits.
She nodded. "Let's go."
Lily's tears instantly vanished into a beaming smile. Grabbing Seraphina's hand in one of hers and Dominic's in the other, she skipped happily toward the exit.
...
The table was already laden with dishes, almost all of which Lily had chosen herself.
Dominic glanced over the spread, slightly surprised that she hadn't ordered her absolute favorite: garlic butter shrimp.
Lily announced solemnly, "Mom is allergic to shrimp, so we can't have it."
Seraphina paused.
It seemed the conversation Chelsea had with Lily last time had actually stuck.
Dominic also looked stunned.
He suddenly realized that after six years of marriage, he had never known she was allergic to seafood.
Lily used her chopsticks to place a piece of beef onto Seraphina's plate.
"Mom, eat this one. It's really yummy."
Seraphina stared down at the little mountain of beef piling up on her plate and murmured softly in acknowledgment.
The atmosphere was uncharacteristically peaceful.
Just then, the restaurant doors flew open, and a figure stormed inside.
It was Harvey.
He marched straight up to their table and slammed his hand down on the surface, his face twisted in rage.
"Dominic! Cynthia is still lying in a hospital bed, and you have the nerve to bring another woman out to dinner?! What kind of monster are you?"
Dominic's expression instantly darkened.
Seraphina let out a cold scoff. "He's not wrong."
Hearing her, Harvey redirected his fury, pointing a shaking finger straight at Seraphina.
"You're the worst of them all! You're getting a divorce, yet you're still clinging to him! You've been a pathetic loser since college, always trying to steal what belongs to Cynthia, always failing to measure up, and now you're trying to trap him? You're absolute trash!"
He then pointed down at Lily. "And this little brat born from a trashy woman is just a tool to manipulate—"
Slap!
Before he could finish, Seraphina backhanded him across the face.
Her eyes were absolutely lethal. "Where do you get off being so disrespectful? You have a filthy mouth. Say one more word about my child, and I'll beat you half to death."
Harvey stood paralyzed for two seconds. When reality set in, he began to tremble with fury. "You dare hit me?"
He raised his hand, fully intending to strike her back.
Seraphina easily intercepted his wrist, locking it in place, and slapped him twice more across the face with her free hand.
Stumbling backward from the force of the blows, Harvey tried to hurl another insult, but the moment he met Seraphina's murderous glare, the words died in his throat.
"Get out."
Harvey shuddered violently, turned on his heel, and sprinted out of the restaurant without daring to look back.
Lily watched the whole scene in stunned silence. When she finally processed what had happened, she threw her arms around Seraphina.
"Mom, you were so cool! I love you so much!"
