A massive shockwave ripped through Dominic's chest.
So it was her.
So Cynthia was the one who wrote that piece.
Images from the past flooded his mind: the tree-lined campus paths, Cynthia walking past him clutching her textbooks, the sunlight hitting the perfect side of her face.
Back then, she was the undisputed beauty queen of the university, a brilliant prodigy. Guys lined up around the block to pursue her, but she only ever smiled at him.
He made that piece his ringtone, and he kept it for ten solid years.
Even though she went on to do so many despicable things, and even though his heart harbored resentment and anger toward her, every time that melody played, he was instantly transported back to the radiant, glowing Cynthia of their youth.
He reached out and pulled Cynthia into his arms.
"I remember," his voice was husky. "Back then, we promised we'd be together for the rest of our lives."
Cynthia leaned against his chest, her fingers clutching his shirt tightly.
"I'm just glad you didn't forget."
"But why didn't you ever tell me that you wrote this piece?"
Cynthia's tone was impossibly tender. "I didn't want to boast. Seeing you use it every day made me so happy. Besides, we were already together, so I just wanted to keep it as a precious little secret between us."
"But lately, you've been growing so cold to me... I felt like I finally had to say it."
A sharp pang of guilt stabbed at Dominic's heart. So that was the truth.
He had almost betrayed something so incredibly pure and beautiful.
He held Cynthia even tighter. Suddenly, remembering the report from his assistant, a chilling glint surfaced in his eyes.
"This piece belongs to you. I won't let anyone steal it."
He grabbed his phone and dialed his assistant.
"Investigate a woman named Valerie Vance. She is suspected of plagiarizing *The Promise of Time*. Gather all the evidence and send her a cease-and-desist immediately."
He hung up the phone and looked down at Cynthia.
"Don't worry. I will make sure everything that rightfully belongs to you is returned."
Cynthia smiled, a fleeting glint of triumph flashing through her eyes.
She had done her homework. This piece had been unclaimed for a decade, and Valerie had only recently taken it out to monetize it. It clearly wasn't written by Valerie either.
If Valerie could falsely claim it, why couldn't she?
The piece Dominic had cherished for ten years could only belong to her, Cynthia Ross.
The next day, Valerie frantically called Seraphina.
"Seraphina! I just got hit with a lawsuit! The Lockwood Group is accusing me of plagiarism, demanding I take down all my work, and suing me for damages!"
