Dominic Lockwood stiffened.

He opened his mouth to explain, but found himself completely at a loss for words.

After a long moment, he forced the words out.

"Seraphina, I was just worried about you. Cynthia Ross hasn't been caught yet. She hates you so much, and if she tries to hurt you again..."

"That has nothing to do with you."

Seraphina cut him off.

"Dominic, even if I am in real danger, I don't need your interference, and I certainly don't want you coming to my rescue."

She looked right at him, her words clipped and firm. "So, please, don't come around anymore. Staying far away from me is the best way you can help."

A dull ache throbbed in Dominic's chest.

He remembered the fire, remembered risking his life to pull her out, thinking that maybe, just maybe, it would change her opinion of him even a little.

But now he understood that Seraphina truly didn't need him anymore.

Even saving her life couldn't erase the six years of pain he had put her through.

"Seraphina..."

He swallowed hard, his voice terribly hoarse.

But Seraphina was completely done listening.

"Gideon, let's go."

Gideon nodded. He pulled the car door open for her, shielding her as she got in.

Seeing her about to leave, Dominic suddenly took a step forward.

"Seraphina!"

Seraphina didn't even break her stride.

Dominic watched her walk away, a burning sensation stinging his eyes.

The next second, he bent forward in a deep, desperate bow toward Seraphina.

"I'm sorry."

His voice trembled, the words draining every ounce of his strength.

"Seraphina, everything in the past was my fault. I wronged you."

Seraphina didn't look back. She simply said, "Dominic, saying all this now is completely meaningless."

With that, she slid into the car.

Gideon shot Dominic a cold, dismissive glance before getting into the driver's seat and pulling away.
