Seraphina looked at him, then turned her gaze to Victor.
The older man was casually sipping his tea, his expression perfectly relaxed. It was obvious the two of them had planned this ambush from the start.
She rapidly ran the calculations in her head.
She had to manage the professor's research project, maintain her flexible role at Cole's, and now, if she took on Zenith Energy...
Could she actually handle it all?
But then she remembered what Victor had just said.
They needed someone with real technical expertise to vet the partners.
Could she really just sit back and watch them struggle?
"Alright," Seraphina finally said. "I'll do it."
She couldn't bear to let her professor down.
Since she had made the choice to claw her way out of a suffocating marriage, it was time to step into the light and forge a completely different path for herself.
It was pitch black outside by the time they left the club.
Before pulling the car door shut, Victor glanced back at Seraphina, the wrinkles around his eyes deepening with a warm smile.
"Don't forget what you promised, Seraphina."
"I won't, Professor," she replied firmly. "I remember."
The car drove off into the night.
Seraphina took a deep breath, the cool air filling her lungs and making her feel more alive than she had in years.
It was nearly eight o'clock when she got back to her apartment.
She unlocked the door, greeted by the warm glow of the hallway light she had purposely left on before leaving.
Just as she slipped into her house slippers, the doorbell rang.
Startled, she turned back and opened the door.
Chelsea Sterling stood in the hallway, holding two bottles of wine and a massive charcuterie board.
Her makeup was flawless, and she was still wearing a sharp, tailored black blazer. She had clearly come straight from the office.
She sat down on the sofa, wine glass in hand.
"Fine, as long as you're happy with it. But the offer stands—if you ever want to upgrade, I have plenty of spare rooms at my place."
Seraphina sat beside her, grabbing a piece of cured meat.
"Just knowing you have my back is enough, but I'll pass for now. Besides, once the project starts, I'll probably be practically living at the lab dorms anyway."
She knew better than anyone how all-consuming scientific research was.
Chelsea nodded in agreement, taking a sip of wine. Her expression suddenly turned entirely serious.
"Down to business. You know that private investigator I hired to tail Dominic? I need to give you an update."
Seraphina nodded. "Go ahead."
"The PI said Dominic is insanely paranoid. The man doesn't leave a single loose end. Whenever he meets Cynthia for dinner or drinks, it's always at hyper-exclusive, private venues."
"He couldn't get a single compromising photo of them together."
Chelsea let out an irritated sigh. "That woman, Cynthia... she's way more calculating than I gave her credit for."
