Chapter 17 Taking the Fall
“This car…” Henry spoke with confusion.
Rosalie pushed the wheelchair and stopped in front of a large SUV.
“I had someone buy it yesterday,” Rosalie replied.
The car hadn’t been registered yet and looked brand new.
Henry felt uncomfortable and said, “This car costs nearly 40,000 dollars. Where did you get the money?”
Most of Rosalie’s earnings were donated to the orphanage. Without a college degree, her income wasn’t high.
Henry could hardly imagine that she had quietly bought such a car.
Rosalie’s face turned red with embarrassment. “I took out a loan. The money I saved these past two years was just enough for the down payment. I had the back seats removed, and with the trunk space, it can fit the wheelchair. This way you’ll have an easier time getting around.”
Henry felt his heart soften. After a long silence, he finally said, “Rosalie, you’re really foolish.”
“I’m happy to be,” she said. She took out the keys and unlocked the car. She opened the passenger door and lifted Henry up in her arms.
Henry was 6’2″ and over 165 pounds, but Rosalie scooped him up in her arms without even breaking a sweat or getting flushed.
“I feel like a giant baby,” Henry said with a bitter smile.
Rosalie smiled with pursed lips. “Well, aren’t you? In my eyes, you’ll always be like a little kid!”
She started the car. “Where should we go?”
Henry replied, “Starlight Plaza first.”
They arrived at Starlight International Plaza.
This was one of the busiest shopping centers in Skysouth.
Henry planned to buy clothes.
His wardrobe consisted entirely of casual wear, athletic clothes, and his work uniforms. His previous routine hadn’t required much variety.
But from now on, he was destined to deal with many people. Continuing to wear these clothes would be somewhat undignified.
Moreover, Rosalie’s clothes were worn out. Her jeans were faded from washing and looked rather shabby.
“Still have 50,000 left,” he said. He checked his account balance while frowning.
The budget was a bit tight. But it should be enough since he still had his credit card.
As a homemaker, his paycheck was controlled by Luciana. So he never kept much money on hand. This 50,000 was his secret nest egg. It was originally meant to buy his wife a purse.
But that wasn’t necessary anymore.
An hour later, they walked out of the mall. They had spent 49,000 on two outfits, basically exhausting the budget.
Half an hour later, Rosalie pushed Henry into the prison.
In the prison visiting room, a guard spoke.
“You have 15 minutes,” the guard said before leaving the visiting room. He closed the door behind him.
Ordinary people didn’t get this kind of treatment. But Henry had contacted Adam, who had arranged special treatment.
Separated by transparent glass sat a burly man in an orange prison jumpsuit. It was William, the van driver from that day’s rear-end collision.
“It’s you?”
When William first saw Henry, he didn’t recognize him. But after seeing the wheelchair, his expression grew complex.
Henry chuckled lightly. “What, surprised to see me?”
William immediately sneered. “You bastard, how does it feel being crippled? Want to kill me? Ha! I’ll serve ten years at most. Maybe 2/3
not even ten! You’re stuck being disabled for life.”
“I don’t want to kill you,” Henry shook his head. His eyes showed no hatred. They were calm as still water.
William was taken aback. Then he continued sneering. “Screw you, stop pretending! I’m telling you, you brought this on yourself. I told you to pay 10,000 dollars! But you chose money over your life. Who’s to blame for that? Now you can regret it forever.”
“I’m curious about something. You weren’t the one who actually did it that day. So why are you taking the fall? Can you tell me what really happened? Was it Ethan who ordered it, or someone else?”
