Chapter 17 Time to Kill

Chapter 17 Time to Kill

The six of them sat in a circle and began to eat.

At first, everyone tried to be polite and restrained. But before long, they were eating faster and faster.

Chloe worried that Reina might feel shy and not be able to grab enough food, so she quickly filled a large bowl for her.

It was not a small bowl either. It was a big serving bowl normally used for dishes, more than enough to fill Reina’s stomach.

Reina did not stand on ceremony. She picked up the bowl and started eating.

She put a piece of honey-glazed meat into her mouth. The meat was tender and soft, rich with flavor, and so delicious that it almost made her forget everything else.

The wheat buns were also excellent. After dipping into the thick, savory soup, each bite was chewy and satisfying, with the natural fragrance of wheat flour.

The cooking really was as good as the chefs in the small cafeteria.

The six of them were eating heartily when the door suddenly shook from loud pounding.

“Hey! Everyone, come out! Mutant rats have run into the courtyard! Hurry up and come kill them!”

The moment they heard this, everyone’s eyes lit up. All of them turned to look at Reina.

Reina swallowed the last piece of honey-glazed meat, wiped her mouth, and stood up. “I’ll go back and get my gear.”

At a moment like this, no one could hide. Everyone had to give it their all.

The scenes she had just seen on her smartwatch kept reminding her that she had to be ready to run for her life at any time.

Behind those mutant rats were countless mutated giant beasts. No one could guarantee that they would not crash through the walls and rush into the camp.

“Alright! Go get it! We’ll wait for you!” Chloe said excitedly as she hurriedly pulled out her protective suit and put it on.

Reina nodded and rushed back to her room. She quickly put on her protective suit, fastened her helmet, pulled down the face shield, and packed all her belongings into her backpack.

She had to be ready to flee at any moment.

Going out at night was indeed dangerous. But if mutant beasts broke into the camp and she did not run, she would only be waiting to die.

She closed the door and went downstairs.

When Reina reached the ground floor, Chloe and the others were already fully dressed in their gear, waiting eagerly for her.

“Let’s go. Time to kill some rats,” Reina said as she stepped out of the building first, holding the newly bought machete in her hand.

The flamethrower hung across her shoulder, ready to be used at any time.

Chloe followed closely behind her, scanning their surroundings as they walked.

Many people had gathered in the camp courtyard by now. Everyone was asking one another nervously.

“What’s going on? Why are we being called out to kill rats in the middle of the night?”

“Yeah, did mutant rats really get into the camp? I didn’t see anything.”

“Shh! Stop talking! Listen to what the mercenaries are saying over there!”

The crowd immediately began moving toward the mercenaries.

Reina and the others squeezed through the people as well. They saw a man wearing camouflage protective gear standing on top of a jeep, shouting loudly.

“Listen up! We just received news from the drones. A large number of mutant beasts are heading toward the camp! Pick up your weapons and join us in defending against them!”

The crowd gasped in shock. “What? A large number of mutant beasts are coming? Does that mean Camp 98 might be destroyed like Camp 53?”

Everyone had seen the videos online. Those scenes were terrifying.

Before this, many people still held onto a bit of hope. They believed only small camps would be unable to withstand mutant beast attacks. Camp 98 was one of the few large camps, with more than 10000 people gathered here. Surely it would not fall so easily.

Now it seemed that hope had only been a form of self-deception. They might end up crushed into pulp beneath the feet of giant

mutant beasts.

“Quiet! Let me make this clear. If anyone hides in the camp and refuses to go out, the guards have the authority to enforce orders by force. Anyone who resists will be shot on the spot!”

His voice was stern and unquestionable. “The camp gate will open immediately. All team move out. No pushing, no fighting. Form a firepower line and fight the mutant beasts together!

“Now I will explain the battle plan. Every thirty teams will form one firepower wall. If a gap appears, the squads behind must fill it immediately. Anyone who runs away during battle will be executed!”

After finishing his threats, another man in camouflage jumped onto the jeep and began speaking in a much gentler tone.

“Fellow survivors, we have reached a critical moment between life and death. Only by standing together do we have a chance to survive. We must fight with everything we have to overcome this crisis.

“If each one of us can kill just one mutant beast, then ten thousand people can eliminate ten thousand beasts. So don’t panic, and don’t lose hope. Victory is in your hands.”
