Wasteland Queen: My Harvest Power novel Chapter 49

Chapter 49 One Hour to Survive

“Fine, fine! Just get here and save us!” At a time like this, Reina didn’t even dare ask how much it would cost. as no amount of money mattered more than staying alive.

“Alright. We’ll be there in an hour. Stay alive until then-don’t make this trip a waste.” With that Victor hung

Reina could not believe her ears.

Was that even something a human should say? What did he mean, a waste of a trip?

But he wasn’t wrong. In this situation, surviving even one hour would already be a miracle.

Chloe, who had overheard the call, nearly jumped up in excitement. “Dylan! Reina hired mercenaries to save us! He said they’ll be here in an hour!”

“Really?” Sasha clasped her hands together, tears welling up in her eyes. “That’s wonderful! We’re saved!”

Only she knew how terrified she had been along the way. It hadn’t even been twenty minutes, yet it felt like a lifetime.

The burly man pulling the cart heard the conversation too. Knowing help was coming, he quickened his pace, silently grateful he hadn’t refused to pull Reina.

Among the group, some people actually knew a few mercenaries, but not a single one could get them to help.

The replies they got were all the same: too many people needed help, and they had too few vehicles. They simply couldn’t spare anyone.

No one expected things to turn around like this. The fact that mercenaries had agreed to come at all filled everyone with hope.

The entire group began moving faster, each person clinging to that fragile expectation.

Strangely, they didn’t encounter any other survivors along the way, nor did they see a single vehicle.

Either people had already sensed something was wrong and detoured around this area, or those ahead of them had run even faster.

Everyone kept glancing at their smartwatches, silently willing time to pass faster.

Just as hope began to settle in, everything changed.

A massive mutant wolf suddenly burst out from the ruins beside the road and lunged straight at the person at the front of the group.

The victim was a teenage boy, barely eighteen or nineteen. He didn’t even have time to scream before his head was crushed in the wolf’s jaws.

The other survivors shrieked in terror, scattering in all directions.

But how could they outrun mutant wolves with Agility over sixty?

In mere moments, two more people were torn apart.

Worst of all, the wolf pack from behind surged forward, launching a full hunt on the survivors.

The sudden chaos jolted Reina. She forced herself upright, snatched the spike from Chloe’s hands, and aimed its tip at the approaching wolves.

If any of them lunged, she would drive it straight through their skull.

Ursula and Merrick, along with Dylan and Sasha, quickly closed in, forming a tight circle with their backs to each other, shielding the cart.

Sure enough, the wolves didn’t approach again. Instead, they paced and roared, circling them.

The few survivors who had escaped death hurried over as well, huddling near the cart, trembling violently.

And so they stood, back to back, locked in a tense standoff with the surrounding mutant wolves.

Time dragged on, but Victor and his men still hadn’t arrived.

By now, Reina’s entire body was burning. The fever clouded her mind, and her hands were barely able to grip the spike.

“Reina, drink some water.”

Noticing something was wrong, Chloe spoke in a trembling voice, pushing the canteen to her lips.

Reina took a few sips. The cool water helped clear her head a little.

She raised her wrist and checked the time. The hour was almost up, but the highway remained empty. Not a single vehicle in sight.

A trace of despair crept into her chest.

Just then, someone suddenly shouted, “There’s a drone in the sky! Look! Could it be the mercenaries?”

Reina looked up. A drone was flying in from the distance, and in front of it, a small bird was darting through the air at incredible speed, heading straight toward them.

“Maggie! Did you pick a fight with a drone again?”

She opened her arms toward it.

The bird crashed right into her chest with a thump, chirping nonstop.

“Ah! Armored vehicles! One, two, three… Five! Five of them! We’re saved!”

The survivors broke down in tears of relief.

As the vehicles drew closer, gunfire rang out.

The wolves surrounding the cart retreated in fear, their savage golden eyes now filled with caution.

Reina forced herself to take one last look. The fear in her heart finally loosened, and she collapsed unconscious onto the cart.

When she opened her eyes again, she found herself lying in a pristine white hospital room.
