Chapter 50 The Cost of Survival

Chloe immediately opened her smartwatch and contacted Sasha. “Sasha, Reina’s awake, and her fever’s down. Please make some soup and bring it over.”

Sasha acknowledged on the other end and hung up.

Reina asked, “What happened after I passed out? Who saved us?”

Chloe smiled brightly. “It was the Thunder Mercenary Corps. Captain Langley personally led the team rescue us. They even killed several mutant wolves-Level 3 ones, apparently.”

She then patted her chest, still shaken. “Yesterday really scared me to death. I thought we were all going to die there. Honestly, it’s all thanks to you, Reina, otherwise we’d all be done for.”

Reina smiled faintly, then asked, “Did Captain Langley say anything else? Did he mention payment?”

Chloe blinked and shook her head. “No. He dropped you off at the hospital and left. Told us to take good care of you, and said not to worry about the treatment cost for now.”

So… Victor wasn’t going to charge for the rescue?

Just as Reina was thinking that, her smartwatch chimed.

She opened it and saw a screenshot sent by Victor.

Expanding it, Reina froze.

It was a long list of charges

“Armored vehicle energy consumption: 35,000 points

“Energy rifle consumption: 58,000 points

H

“Twenty mercenaries’ hiring fee: 20 × 2,000 40,000 points…”

Reina exited the message and began calculating silently.

One hundred and thirty three thousand points. Plus the 50,000 points Victor had already paid upfront for her hospital treatment… That made over 180,000.

And that wasn’t even the end of it. Her leg was still being treated, and the follow-up costs were unknown.

Right now, she has just over 90,000 points in her account, which she earned by risking her life working for the mercenary corps. And now, just like that, she owed them over 90,000 instead. Where was the justice in

that?

Reina felt completely cheated, very badly cheated.

After all, this entire situation had started because of the mercenary corps in the first place, which led to everything that followed.

Looking at it that way, she really had been played for a fool.

Chapter 50 The Cost of Survival

But now that she was alive, and the debt was already there, arguing about right and wrong didn’t seem to

matter anymore.

Forget it.

Reina turned to Chloe. “Are you and your family all okay?”

Chloe blinked, confused. “What could’ve happened to us? We’re all fine. Yesterday, my brother and Sasha even rented a small place in the inner city that’s right near this hospital.”

Reina nodded, then asked, “What about Ursula and Merrick? Did they go home?”

“Oh, them? They went to collect money from the others who made it back.”

“Collect money? What money?”

“The mercenary rescue fee, of course.”

Chloe said seriously, “I heard everything when you were talking to Captain Langley. Since we have to pay, Ursula went to ask the other survivors to share the cost. If everyone splits it, it won’t be too much.”

“You’re such an amazing friend.” Reina grabbed Chloe’s hand, deeply moved. “You guys are really loyal. I’ll forward you the bill Captain Langley sent later.”

Chloe’s mouth twitched slightly. “Don’t celebrate too early. I doubt many people can actually pay.”

Reina was stunned. “Why not?”

“Because one of the survivors is Merrick’s younger brother’s family. They already had conflicts before. And now one of the brothers died, and later a younger sister was killed by a mutant wolf too. It’s going to be hard for Ursula to get any points from them.”

“I see…” Reina’s spirits dropped.

Still, even a little help was better than nothing. She wasn’t picky.

At that moment, the hospital room door opened, and Sasha walked in carrying a food container. “Oh? You look much better already.”

She set the container on the small table. “Want to eat now? I just made some chicken soup. It’s still hot. Added some greens too.”

Reina quickly sat up. “Perfect timing, I was just getting hungry. Thank you, Sasha.”

Chloe hurried over to support her back and propped up a pillow.

“No need to thank me. You’re always so polite, it makes me feel awkward,” Sasha said with a smile. “Next time, don’t keep thanking me.”

Reina nodded. After finishing the soup, Chloe helped her to the bathroom before she lay back down on the

bed.

Once the IV drip was done, Reina said to Chloe and Sasha, “I’m much better now. You two haven’t slept for a
