Chapter 64 The Misfit Toys Join the Circus

She turned back to Victor. “Captain Langley, I want to take my squad out to dig sweet potatoes tomorrow. You’ll send an escort, right?” If she was handing over half her haul, she’d better get something for it.

“Sweet potatoes?” Victor raised an eyebrow. “How many are we talking about?”

Reina wasn’t ready to reveal the high-contamination detail yet. “You’ll see when we get there.”

“All right. 7 a.m. at the main compound. Bring your squad. Don’t be late.”

Victor was curious about where Reina was planning to dig those sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes that needed a five-ton truck?

But the base’s food situation was grim, and a shortage was inevitable.

If Reina could actually fill a truck with edible produce, it would take real pressure off his unit.

This was worth investigating personally.

Victor and his team left shortly after.

Reina immediately messaged Chloe, Ursula, and the others, asking if they wanted to join Thunder Mercenary Corps.

The Scott siblings accepted immediately. They were ecstatic.

Joining a mercenary corps meant they could register as inner-city residents.

Even if they didn’t get housing right away, pitching a tent in a designated zone was still infinitely better than the lawless outer city.

Sasha burst into happy tears and started packing immediately, determined to reach the inner city before dawn.

The Grishams were equally thrilled.

They’d been held back by family complications and had never managed to join a corps.

By the time Merrick tried to apply, every unit had turned him down.

He was 28, had awakened a strong offensive fire ability, but was only Level 2. Among Greenfinch Base’s 70,000-plus ability users, that was utterly average.

Worse, his mental energy was damaged. Healing it required either a fortune’s worth of mid-to-high-grade energy recovery potions or regular consumption of high-grade clean mutant beast meat.

Neither was within his reach.

Now, Reina was extending an invitation, and the couple was overjoyed.

Corps members received one mid-grade energy recovery potion per week as a standard benefit. For Merrick, that alone was life-changing.

The couple told no one in the family. They packed their gear in secret and waited for dawn.

The next morning, before dawn.

Reina was up early, watering the vegetables on her balcony and sealing every window tight.

The Level 4 mutant tomatoes had sprouted and flowered. The beans were climbing their bamboo stakes. Two Level 4 mutant chili plants stood waist-high-days away from blooming.

The Level 2 and 3 crops were thriving too, lush and green enough to make her heart lift.

She suited up in her new high-grade protective gear, strapped on her helmet and backpack, grabbed her shovel and premium machete, and headed out.

Thunder Mercenary Corps HQ was only a few miles from her apartment complex.

Even at a full sprint, it only took her a few minutes.

Several armored vehicles were already parked outside the compound, plus two trucks and two SUVS.

Dozens of fully armed mercenaries stood around chatting, clearly waiting on someone.

Reina spotted Chloe, Dylan, Sasha, and the Grishams standing off to one side and walked over.

“Reina, bring them to registration.”

A soldier named Terrence Kent flagged her down, pointing at Chloe’s group. “Get them outfitted while you’re at it.”

Reina nodded and led them inside.

Half an hour later, all six had been issued camo protective suits, Thunder Corps insignia patches, and two energy rifles.

Victor said, “Your squad will be assigned to Platoon Three. Resources and logistics go through them.”

This was fine by Reina-she didn’t know anyone, so one platoon was as good as another.

Except Platoon Three’s leader shot it down immediately, “Captain Langley, Platoon Three is full. And we don’t have spare vehicles for them.”

Victor frowned but didn’t push. The platoon was genuinely at capacity, and Reina’s squad included civilians with no abilities. with
