Chapter 63 The Art of Steal and Steel

Victor nodded. “You can form your own squad, or join an existing one.”

Finished

“I’ll form my own.” Reina had no interest in taking orders. With her own squad, she could bring Chloe and the others along.

Then, something occurred to her. “Captain Langley, if my squad runs into trouble out in the wild and calls for backup, is there a rescue fee?”

One of the soldiers-a wiry guy everyone called Stick-jumped in immediately. “We’re all family here. No charge for rescue.”

Reina paused, then tried her luck. “Captain Langley, since I’m joining your unit, does that mean my previous rescue fee gets refunded?”

The room went still.

Every eye in the room turned to Victor.

He cleared his throat. “Those are two different things. That fee’s already been distributed. If you can get the guys to hand it back voluntarily, that’s your business.”

“Oh well, worth a shot.” Reina had only been testing the waters-but if the money had actually come back, she wouldn’t have turned it down.

The group finished eating and passed the machetes around, admiring the craftsmanship.

Then, something extraordinary happened. The moment Victor gripped one of the blades, it dissolved into a stream of metallic vapor and flowed directly into his palm.

His entire arm transformed-gleaming, cold, unmistakably metal.

Reina’s eyes widened, watching this scene in disbelief.

He picked up a second machete. Same thing-liquid metal, absorbed into his hand.

After absorbing both, Victor’s presence visibly intensified. He clenched his fist, and a massive, razor-edged greatsword materialized from thin air.

“So, that’s how Metal Ability Users make their weapons,” Reina breathed. It was incredible.

The convenience was ridiculous.

If the blade chipped, it could just… reforge itself. She was jealous.

She’d assumed Victor had bought the machetes for his team. Instead, he’d fed them straight into his ability and forged something entirely new.

If she’d known, she would’ve just bought a slab of raw steel and harvested that instead.

It would’ve saved her a fortune in forging fees.

Chapter 63 The Art of Steal and Steel

Finished

Stick grinned. “That’s not even Captain Langley’s best trick. In combat, he can encase his entire body in metal armor. Bullets can’t get through.”

Reina nodded vigorously.

She’d seen a Metal-armored Ability User before-the one who’d been sent flying by a mutant wild boar Probably not Victor, though.

No wonder he’d made captain so young. His combat power had to be on another level.

She couldn’t resist-she threw an Eye of Insight at him.

“Energy -1. EXP +10. Target stats: Victor Langley. Age: 25. Physique: 42. Strength: 40. Agility: 33. Energy: 42. Level 4 Metal Ability (Talent) (Mild genetic damage, recovering)”

Wait-two weeks ago, it had been moderate genetic damage. How had it dropped to mild?

His Physique and Strength had also jumped. She distinctly remembered: a Level 4 ability user whose stats had all been in the low thirties, barely qualifying as Level 3.

Reina was baffled.

Victor glanced her way–he seemed to sense she’d been scanning him again.

But he didn’t look annoyed. Instead, he asked seriously, “Reina, you’re sure about joining Thunder Mercenary Corps?”

Reina replied, “Absolutely. We’ll get vehicles for missions, right?”

She hadn’t been able to rent anything over two tons online. Thunder Mercenary Corps was her only real shot at getting trucks, armed cover, and enough time to stockpile food for herself and Chloe’s family before winter hit.

Victor nodded. “But you cover your own fuel. If you can’t, you surrender 50 percent of whatever you bring back.”

“Fifty percent? That much?” Reina immediately reconsidered.

What kind of highway robbery is this?

“It’s really not that bad–we all pay the same,”

Stick launched into a rapid explanation. “Think about it-after every mission, the vehicles need major maintenance. That alone costs a fortune. Then, there are the energy rifles and fuel consumption.

“Plus, you’re under the Corps’ protection, so there’s a membership fee…”

“Wait, if I pay for the vehicle and energy rifle expenses myself, how many supplies do I have to hand over?” Reina asked while quickly running the numbers in her head.

Stick said, “Then, you only need to turn over 30 percent.”

Reina was speechless.
