Watching You Burn In Regret novel Chapter 100

He bought skeins of yarn, unraveled and re-knitted them over and over, and after nearly a month, he finally finished a scarf for you. And what did you do? Complained the color was ugly, the style was ugly—you never wore it, not even once.

"Well, aren't you one to talk? You're no different from me!"

Living under the same roof for all those years, Swain knew most of Slater's stories—maybe not every detail, but close enough.

Slater's pupils contracted slightly as understanding suddenly dawned on him.

In truth, Seren's folded paper stars and those sweet cakes she bought weren't even meant for him, and he hadn't really been angry about that.

What he'd been angry about, all along, was that Swain clearly didn't care, yet Seren kept going out of her way for him.

It was like seeing a candy he desperately wanted, tossed aside like trash straight into the garbage.

So all this time, his resentment toward Seren had come from caring about her—mixed with his own petty jealousy.

Now, memories surfaced: after that day, Seren had folded stars for him too, and even brought him those sweet cakes.

But all he'd ever fixated on were her shortcomings, repeating harsh words that cut her deeper each time.

He blamed Seren for growing distant, for becoming withdrawn and rebellious, for drifting further away from him with every passing day.

But it had never occurred to him—not really—that he, whether directly or indirectly, had caused it all.

He'd watched as the girl who used to laugh and tease, bright-eyed and mischievous, grew battered and broken before his eyes. He hadn't reached out to help; instead, he'd twisted the knife.

Suddenly, he recalled what he'd said to her that day—"Even if you die, I won't spare you a second glance."

He should have realized, when Seren quietly thanked him, that she was done recognizing him as her brother.

He'd sensed it then, somewhere deep down, but refused to admit he was wrong.

And after all that, he'd even raised his hand against her.

He'd known full well that Zena would erupt in fury when she found out about Seren moving in with the Brewer family, but he hadn't stopped Carla—not once.

Seren's decision to sever ties with them—it was he who drove in the final nail.
