Seren's flight was scheduled for the early afternoon. She'd planned to leave the house around eleven-thirty, but Lennon insisted on driving her and had her at the airport right at eleven sharp.
After parking, Lennon walked her into the terminal, handling the check-in process with his usual calm efficiency. Seren trailed beside him, only producing her ID when asked. She barely had to lift a finger.
She found it a little unsettling. Seren had always been fiercely independent, used to doing everything herself, not one to lean on others for help. Now, with nothing to do but follow Lennon's lead, she felt oddly out of place—but she kept quiet.
Lennon, for his part, was every bit the responsible, dependable man she knew him to be. In his mind, these were simply the things he ought to do.
When they reached the security checkpoint, Seren was carrying a small suitcase she could take onboard with her—no need to check it in. At the moment, though, Lennon was holding it for her. His fingers, long and elegant, wrapped around the handle in a way that made even something as mundane as luggage look refined.
"Let me take my suitcase," Seren said, reaching for it.
He released his grip, but instead of handing it over, he stepped forward and wrapped her in a hug.
Seren froze, her hand suspended awkwardly in midair. People bustled past, a few glancing their way. She instinctively pulled back a bit—public displays of affection weren't really her thing.
But Lennon held her close, his cool fingertips threading gently through her hair.
"Text me when you get there," he murmured softly, "so I know you're safe."
"Okay."
It was just a goodbye hug—nothing out of the ordinary for people who cared about each other. She and Lennon were married, after all; there was nothing inappropriate about it. She told herself she ought to get used to it.
While Seren tried to talk herself into relaxation, she felt Lennon's breath warm against her ear.
