She'd always enjoyed her solitude, but now the house felt cavernously empty.
Seth likely wouldn't be assigning her any work for a while, having set aside this time for her to prepare for the wedding.
She sent a message to Nadine, who was on the night shift and had just finished a meeting with nothing else to do. They quickly agreed to go shopping.
The garage was in the basement. When Seren went down, she saw that the once-empty space was now filled with several smaller cars, all models that were easy for women to drive. Seren wasn't picky about cars; whether it was a luxury brand or not didn't matter to her. To her, a car was a utility, and as long as it was convenient and handled well, it was good enough.
She chose one at random and drove off. Just as she parked at their meeting spot, Nadine's call came through. Seren got out of the car and immediately spotted her friend standing in the most conspicuous spot in front of the mall entrance.
Dressed in a black sweater, dark wide-leg jeans, and black-framed glasses, with her hair tied back in a ponytail, Nadine looked vibrant and youthful. It was hard to believe she was the head of internal medicine.
As Seren approached, Nadine greeted her with a teasing smirk. "I was starting to think you'd chosen love over friendship. Now that you have Lennon, I thought you'd cut me off completely."
Seren shook her head. "Never."
She firmly believed that even after marriage, a woman should have her own career and social circle, not just revolve around her husband's life.
Nadine was pleased. "Good. I'm glad to know I still have some standing."
The Brewers were a family with a century-long legacy, known for their strict upbringing and strong moral code. In a way, Seren had also grown up under their influence. Susan Rutledge and Hollis Brewer had taught both her and Nadine to respect themselves and avoid unsavory places like bars, clubs, and dance halls. Susan used to tell them, "Good girls might occasionally be found in places like that, but most good girls wouldn't step foot in them."
So, when Seren and Nadine went out, it was always for simple shopping trips at the mall.
