"I want a fair chance to compete with that man. I don't want to lose without even knowing why!" Sheridan added.
She had already made everything perfectly clear to Sheridan, but he hadn't listened to a word she'd said. Seren felt a wave of exasperation, like she'd been trying to reason with a stubborn mule.
Taking a deep breath, she said, "Mr. Powers, I thought I was clear before, but let me say it one more time: I am married."
"You can get a divorce!" Sheridan interrupted desperately. "I know you don't really love him. He could never treat you as well as I did—"
"Excuse me," Seren cut him off. "But I do have real feelings for my husband. I genuinely like him. And there's no comparison between you and him, because in my eyes, you're not even worthy of being compared to him."
Sheridan's voice grew frantic. "Seren, come back to me. I can overlook everything that's happened. We can start over."
"You might be willing to overlook it," Seren said coldly, "but I'm not."
"Are you still worried about me and Willa Sullivan?" he asked after a moment's hesitation. "I swear, there's nothing between us. I was just helping her out for old times' sake."
Seren had completely lost her patience. "Mr. Powers, if you're sick, there's a hospital just down the street. It's the best in Seaside City, and I'm sure they can treat whatever's wrong with you. Appointments are probably hard to get, so you should have your assistant book one for you tomorrow."
Sheridan stared at her, momentarily stunned, before his face flushed with anger. The hospital Seren was referring to was called Evergreen Hospital. He had passed it on his way here. It was a psychiatric hospital, famous not only in Seaside City but throughout the entire country of Veridia. Sheridan suffered from a mood disorder, and the one thing he couldn't stand was being called mentally ill.
