He understood that Carla was just looking out for herself, but he couldn't bring himself to feel the same way about her anymore.
Just thinking about how she threw him under the bus to save her own skin, all while keeping up that sweet and innocent act - it makes him sick. How can someone be so two-faced?
Zena turned to Carla, who stood with her head bowed. "You should go home with Slater."
Carla snapped back to reality, nodded, and hurried after him.
Outside the conference room, she caught up to Slater in a few quick steps. "Slater," she began tentatively, "can I get a ride home with you?" She was still clinging to the hope that he wouldn't hold a grudge. She put on a naive, innocent expression, as if nothing had happened.
Slater stopped and shot her a withering look before turning away. "Call your own driver. I'm not in the business of chauffeuring royalty." The rejection was absolute, leaving no room for argument. Slater never bothered with pleasantries when dealing with people he disliked.
Tears instantly welled in Carla's eyes. "Slater, I tried to defend you to Mother, I really did. I didn't mean to push all the blame onto you. I was just… I was so scared of her that I said things I shouldn't have. I'm sorry, Slater. Please forgive me."
In the past, her tears would have stirred a feeling of pity in him, but now, he just let out a cold sneer. "Oh, save it. Stop crying in front of me. Do you have any idea how annoying you are?"
Carla choked back her sobs, covering her face with her hands as her shoulders shook. She looked the picture of fragile misery.
