The words hit Carla like a bucket of ice water, plunging her into a freezing abyss.
"Listen, little girl," the woman's voice was now laced with a clear threat, "being the other woman never ends well. I suggest you cut ties with Edwin before this gets ugly for everyone. Understood, Miss Bradley?"
With a final, triumphant laugh, she hung up. Then, she turned to the man beside her with a smirk. "Mr. Montgomery, doesn't your heart ache just a little? Tossing aside the little girlfriend you strung along for ten years. And threatening her on the way out, too. How cruel."
A sneer played on Edwin's lips. "It was all just a game. Ten years doesn't make it real. Did she honestly think she could marry me? I can't tell if a woman like that is simple or just plain stupid. The woman I want is more than just a pretty face." He then shifted to the real issue. "What about the Rutledge Group shareholders? Have you contacted them?"
The woman's smile was coy. "All taken care of. The moment those old geezers heard about the company's crisis, they were desperate to sell. They've all agreed to unload their 25% stake at a low price. We're set to meet them tomorrow to finalize it."

Back at the office, Carla stood motionless for what felt like an eternity before her body finally moved. She numbly made her way downstairs and out of the building. Even in her daze, it wasn't hard to piece it all together.
Edwin had never intended to marry her. From the very beginning, his pursuit had been a calculated part of a larger scheme. Now that he believed his goal was achieved, she was no longer useful—a pawn to be swept off the board.
Once she reached a secluded spot, a wild, hysterical laugh escaped her, so forceful it brought tears to her eyes. Her fingers dug into her palms, but she didn't feel the pain.
How could she have been so stupid? She had seen Edwin as her ticket out of the Bradley family, her savior from that suffocating abyss. She had pinned all her hopes on him, only to discover she was nothing more than a disposable piece in his game. Now, not only had she lost everything, but she was trapped, destined to live out a miserable existence in the Bradley household.
