She had always been wary of handsome, wealthy men, assuming they were all style and no substance. But Lennon was different. He was mature, reliable, and made her feel safe.
She was an early riser, and she started to stretch, intending to get out of bed. But as she moved to lift the covers, a voice, low and husky with sleep, rumbled from above her.
"You're awake?"
She looked up and met his dark, intense gaze. "You're back," she said, stating the obvious. "I thought you were going to be gone for at least a few more days."
He nuzzled his chin into her hair. "I missed Mrs. Crestwell," he said with a small smile. "So I worked overtime to finish the project early. Besides, this is the third day."
His calm explanation sent a ripple of warmth through her. "What time did you get in last night?"
"I landed around eleven," he said, his voice still thick with sleep. "By the time I got home, it was after midnight. You were asleep, so I didn't want to wake you."
"Okay," she whispered, her heart melting. He rarely asked for anything, and she couldn't deny him this.
He tightened his arms around her, and soon, his breathing evened out into a steady rhythm. She, however, was wide awake. She lay there, listening to the sound of his breathing, studying the handsome face on the pillow beside her, and felt a profound sense of peace.
As the gray dawn slowly gave way to bright sunlight, she remained in his arms. Her arm started to go numb, and she shifted, but he instinctively pulled her closer. The simple, unconscious gesture warmed her to her core. For the first time, she allowed herself to think of a future, a lifetime, with this man by her side.
