At seven in the evening, Willa was at the Revelry club with a group of friends. When the drinks started flowing, she excused herself. She couldn't risk drinking alcohol while pregnant; this baby was her ticket into the Powers family.
She went up to the second-floor lounge for a cigarette. As she lit up, she saw a drunk man being helped out of a room at the end of the hall by a waiter. He was in his late forties or early fifties, wearing a gray shirt, a black vest, and gold-rimmed glasses, his hair slicked back with pomade. He looked vaguely familiar.
On closer inspection, she realized it was Sheridan's father, Garry.
She was about to go over and say hello, but he was clearly blackout drunk, stumbling even with the waiter's support. An idea sparked in Willa's mind. Sheridan was avoiding her calls, and Diana was blocking her at every turn. Garry could be her way in.
The waiter helped Garry into an elevator. Willa watched the floor indicator light up, then quickly stubbed out her cigarette and followed them in.
"I'm Mr. Powers' assistant," she said smoothly to the waiter. "Are you taking him to his room?"
Wealthy men had assistants, and she had used his name correctly. The club was also members-only, so the waiter had no reason to doubt her.
"Yes," he replied. "Mr. Thatcher instructed us to take Mr. Powers to a room on the third floor."
On the third floor, the waiter helped Garry onto the bed in his pre-booked room and handed Willa the key card. She took it and pulled a wad of cash from her purse, pressing it into the waiter's hand. "Not a word of this to anyone, understand?"
Money talked. The waiter pocketed the cash. "Of course."
As soon as he was gone, a thrill of excitement shot through Willa. If she could get something on Garry, something to use as leverage, she would be one step closer to marrying into the Powers family.
But what could she do? She considered her options for ten minutes. The most obvious one was to sleep with him and take pictures. It was risky, but it was also her last chance.
