Seren could see the resentment and unwillingness burning in Carla's eyes as clearly as daylight.
No one knew better than she did—Carla was only bowing her head because she had no choice. There was not a shred of genuine remorse in her apology.
Seren arched an eyebrow, her gaze steady, and spoke to Carla, enunciating every word.
"I don't forgive you."
Carla's expression changed in an instant—her face drained of color.
Zena and Thurman, standing nearby, looked equally unhappy. If Susan hadn't been there to keep them in check, they probably would have lashed out right then and there.
Swain, who had been silent and aloof up to this point, suddenly looked flustered. His voice trembled with a note of pleading.
"Seren, please, just forgive Carla. She knows she was wrong. Just give her another chance, will you?"
He might have been speaking for Carla's sake, but Seren knew—most of that plea came from his own heart.
She looked at Swain.
In her memories, Swain was always strict and severe—his face never betraying any extra emotion. After she came back to the Bradley family, Thurman and Zena had technically welcomed her home, but they'd never really taken the time to discipline or guide her. Most of the time, it was Swain—the eldest brother—who played the role of stern father.
She couldn't remember a time when Swain had ever praised or affirmed her. He'd always find something to criticize, his mouth forever dispensing lectures.
If she wanted to take a break from studying, just to relax and have a little fun, Swain would scold her for not being diligent enough, lecturing her about how "success comes from hard work, not from play." If she buckled down and studied, even going so far as to spend hours each day practicing watercolor painting with Mr. Shaw, Swain would tell her that academics should come first, and that hobbies were only secondary. He'd demand that she get her priorities straight.
