Seren had no interest in wasting any more time on the Bradley family's pointless drama. She acted as if they were nothing more than shadows in the room, invisible and insignificant.
Turning to Nadine and Susan, Susan flashed a warm smile.
"It's too loud here. Why don't the three of us head out?" she suggested, her eyes gentle.
Seren had reached a quiet clarity.
Why bother trying to please people who never saw the good in her? Better to save her kindness for those who truly cared.
Slater watched Seren in stunned silence. He'd been staring at her for ages, yet she hadn't so much as glanced his way. To her, he might as well have been part of the wallpaper—irrelevant and easily ignored.
A sudden, uneasy thought crept into his mind: Was Seren planning to cut him off as her brother?
But he quickly dismissed the idea. They were family—blood ties couldn't be erased so easily. Besides, Seren hadn't looked at Swain or the others either. If she were really disowning anyone, she was turning her back on the whole family, not just him.
Impossible, he told himself. Seren might be stubborn, but she'd never go so far as to deny her own kin.
Nadine, beaming, took Seren's hand and led her away, casting a pointed look at Swain and the rest.
"Let's go. The atmosphere here is so toxic, I can hardly breathe."
A weight lifted off Nadine's shoulders. Earlier, she'd worried that a few sweet words from Carla or Swain would sway Seren back. But now, it was obvious: Seren hadn't given an inch; Carla's shamelessness had backfired, and Swain had been left speechless.
The outcome was as satisfying as it was unexpected.
Behind them, Zena and Thurman exchanged looks before turning on their heels and walking off in the opposite direction, both letting out a cold, dismissive snort.
Carla seethed, jaw clenched with frustration—yet there was nothing she could do. Seeing Zena and Thurman leave together, she sneered.
