When Her Death Couldn't Break Him (Cecilia and Nathaniel) novel Chapter 2220

Cecilia's face tightened for a beat, then she replied, "Probably just didn't sleep well."

After that, she meant to ask Calvin what had brought him to her door the night before.

"By the way, did you stop by last night?" she fibbed. "I was exhausted and only half heard someone say my name."

Calvin nodded. "Yeah, I did."

"What was up?" Cecilia asked.

Cecilia asked so openly that Vivian and the rest caught every word, and they all leaned in, ears twitching for gossip.

Calvin glanced at the eager faces and chuckled. "It was nothing. Sven stopped by after midnight with some barbecue, so I thought I'd see if you wanted any."

"Oh, all right."

Cecilia had expected something far more serious.

Vivian frowned. "Mr. Reese, that's really biased of you. Sven told you to ask all of us, yet you only asked Cecilia."

Calvin smiled. "I did knock on your rooms, but it was late and you were already asleep."

"Huh?" Vivian's shoulders sagged. "Maybe so. I passed out the second I hit the bed."

The others accepted Calvin's explanation without question.

Vivian still refused to drop it. "So when exactly did you knock?"

Calvin paused, then replied, "Right at one in the morning."

"That late? No wonder—I was dead asleep," Vivian sighed.

Beside them, Cecilia caught something different in that answer.

She had reached the hospital by twelve-thirty; Calvin couldn't have been outside her door at one.

Only one conclusion fit: he had lied.

It had been Charlotte and Sven's wedding night; they would never have sent barbecue.
