After ending the call, Cecilia told Wren what had really happened.

But Wren still didn't agree with what Jonathan had done.

"Even if Felix was wrong, he was picking on someone else, not Jon. If something like that happens again, just have Jon stand to the side and watch. Don't let him meddle in other people's business."

Cecilia shot back, "Dad, are you saying that when Jon grows up, if he sees someone doing something wrong, he should just look away and pretend he didn't see it?"

Wren choked on his words.

Cecilia went on, "I don't think Jon did anything wrong. He was just wrong in how he handled it this time. He shouldn't have kicked someone first, and I've already told him that."

Once she finished, she didn't wait for Wren to answer. She used work as an excuse and hung up on him again.

Wren stood in the doorway, and the weight on his face deepened.

She hadn't gone far at all. She'd stayed by the entryway and heard Wren's call to Cecilia.

Wren looked at her as she mocked him, pressed his lips together, and had nothing ready to throw back.

"Enough with the digs. About Mrs. Chandler's matter—can you help or not?"

"If I help you, what exactly do I get out of it?" Elena asked.

"We're family. What benefit do you need?" Wren said on instinct.

"Who the hell is family with you? Have some shame."

After tossing that back at him, Elena clicked away in her heels and went to sit in the living room.

Seeing how it was going, Wren softened his tone. "Just help me this once. If my father knows down below, he'll thank you too."

Elena picked up a glass of warm water and took a sip.
